What It Takes to Succeed in a Remote Healthcare Job

Remote healthcare jobs can be found in a variety of areas. Here at Remote.co, we see jobs listed for remote medical coders, nurses, pharmacists, health coaches, and more. In addition to the specific skills you’ll need for your job, there are some specific skills and traits needed to succeed in a remote healthcare job. Below, we’re going over four skills that’ll help you work remotely in the healthcare industry.

Here’s what it takes to succeed in a remote healthcare job:

Communication Skills

This skill is needed for any remote job, whether in the healthcare industry or not. Working from a home office means you’re not able to pop into your boss’ office for a question. If you have coworkers who are working in an office, you won’t be there to ask for help and assistance. Your communication skills need to be top notch in order to get your needs met, to keep your boss and coworkers appraised of what you’re accomplishing, and to stay in the know on department or company happenings.

You’ll need to be proactive in using email, phone calls, instant messaging, or any other communication platform that your company uses to stay in contact with your boss and coworkers.

Compassion

If you’re working directly with patients or clients, you’ll still need compassion and good bedside manner, just as you would in face-to-face interactions. If you’re speaking with patients on the phone, work on the tone of your voice as you’re speaking. Emails require a delicate touch as well. Writing about hard or sensitive topics can be difficult and people can interpret your tone differently than you intended.

Compassion, sensitivity, and friendliness are all good skills to practice if you’re working with patients remotely from your home.

Technology Skills

Working in a remote healthcare job, it’s likely that your job would require the use of specific software to complete your duties. Working remotely from home means there won’t be an IT guy who can quickly come over to your desk every time something goes wrong. You’ll need basic tech and troubleshooting skills in order to minimize downtime if you have a computer issue, an Internet outage, or you can’t figure out a program. Having these skills will make you a more confident and productive remote worker.

Adaptability

This is an especially useful skill if you’ve never performed your job remotely before. If you’re used to an office setting, you’ll need adaptability to easily transfer your job to your home office. You may need to learn new programs and new processes for performing your job. You might not have access to specific machines and devices you previously used. Your ability to adapt to a new way of doing your job will aid you in succeeding in your remote healthcare job.
