Relay Graduate School of Education (Relay) is positioned to bring about transformational change in teacher preparation on a national scale. Relay’s Talent team serves to further this mission by serving as an integral pillar of support, enabling the organization to function at its highest degree through the recruitment, development, and retention of high-performing, mission-aligned team members. Reporting to the Managing Director of Talent, the Senior Director of Human Resources will set the vision for and oversee the execution of Relay’s strategy to provide competitive and equitable benefits and employee policies that meet federal and state employment laws. The Senior Director will also be responsible for ensuring all employees and consultants receive timely contracts and payments. And finally, the Senior Director will manage the team that serves as the “first responders” to employee’s human resources questions.


  • Set and communicate a clear vision for the Human Resources function and communicate that vision to direct reports and key stakeholders, including Finance and managers
  • Independently adjust the Human Resources division of labor and workforce planning strategy to plan multiple, concurrent projects effectively and consistently a year in advance, in order to meet institutional needs and meet the team’s vision
  • Manage a 3-4 person HR team in order to ensure they consistently execute on their responsibilities, meet their individual goals, and continue to develop professionally
  • Independently oversee the consistent prioritization and execution of administering Relay’s benefits, including:
    • Health benefits, 401(k), transit reimbursement, and short-term and long-term disability
    • Independently plan for and execute open enrollment, responding to previous lessons learned while balancing the needs of all employees with the needs of the institution
    • Independently plan for and execute employee benefits programs to improve the overall employee experience, including but not limited to: flu clinics, wellness incentives, financial planning, and 401(k) education
    • Reevaluation of our health plan offerings and administration to decide with senior leader investment changes that will positively impact employee experience and access as well as financial sustainability
  • Independently oversee HR systems and processes and set the vision for ongoing improvements and innovation:
    • Inform the ongoing strategy to maximize our HRIS, Unit 4 Business World
    • Oversee an accurate record of all employees within Relay ‘s human resources information system in order to run important data reports
    • Manage and continue to improve the following employee life-cycle processes: logistical onboarding, internal transitions, and offboarding
    • Consistently and independently evaluate ZenDesk data to oversee the consistent and thorough response to all employee-related questions and concerns, taking any sensitive issues to the Managing Director of Talent
    • Set a vision for increased self-help in ZenDesk and/or UBW by evaluating data and collecting input from key stakeholders, and independently plan and oversee the execution of the vision
    • Independently evaluate the effectiveness of Relay’s payroll and contract processes and oversee improvements with the finance team’s buy-in and investment
  • Independently oversee the creation of organization-wide employee policies related to employment law and benefits: get input and gain investment from crucial stakeholders, and build a comprehensive communication plan for successful roll out and buy-in across the organization, delegating to team members when necessary
  • Independently assess what changes must be made or steps must be taken to ensure Relay is compliant with all federal and state employment laws, make recommendations to Managing Director of Talent
  • Oversee the human resources payroll function and collaborate with the finance team in processing payroll
  • Oversee the creation of all contracts and make process and system improvements to streamline this work stream
  • Support the Managing Director in setting the annual Talent budget and monitoring spending throughout the year
  • Support the Managing Director in handling sensitive personnel issues and investigations


  • 8-10+ years of experience in human resources
  • Successful experience managing, coaching, and developing a team of human resources professionals
  • Proven experience planning, prioritizing, and overseeing the execution of individual and team projects
  • Demonstrated adaptability and proactive planning for contingencies across an HR team
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills – identifying key pain points by collecting input from other stakeholders and reviewing historical information and incorporating this feedback into team-wide process improvements
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills – including vision setting and investment building across an HR team and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated data collection & analysis resulting in a solid plan for data management and integrity across an HR team
