Position Overview

Educate!, a fast-growing non-profit social enterprise, is looking for a Head of US Finance & Operations to solidify our US side finance function and operations systems to build the foundation for our ambitious future growth plans. We have scaled dramatically over our 10 years of operation and this role will take on significant areas of responsibility as our US teams needs expand. As the Head of US Finance & Ops, you will lead and build out Educate!s US finance & operations function and team. Our dynamic US team is primarily focused on fundraising and communications, and weve experienced rapid growth from 2 to 15 full-time team members in 4 years (and growing!).

Your goal will be to execute and set up the systems youll need to smoothly run and scale finance and operations functions to support the organizations continued expansion. Youll be managing our external financial contractors and the Operations Assistant to achieve goals around finance, operations, admin, and HR/talent. Youll lead: all of our US and global-level financial management, external facing budgeting and financial reporting for donors, building and managing HR systems and processes, overseeing administrative process execution, and generally finding ways to support and improve the ways we work. Youll work closely with the US Director with the goal of hitting the ground running and taking ownership of as much as possible, as quickly as you can.

About Educate!

Educate! tackles youth unemployment by partnering with schools and governments to reform what schools teach and how they teach it so that students in Africa have the skills to start businesses, get jobs and drive development in their communities. Our model is delivered through practically-trained teachers and youth mentors. Educate!s goal is to make this practical, skills-based model part of national education systems.

HOW YOULL CONTRIBUTE

US/Global Finance (50%)

Manage key finance functions including our global quarterly financial closes, US banking, annual global audit, annual tax filings, cash reserve investment strategy, transfer and invoice processing, and financial controls design.

  • Manage the external US accountant and bookkeeper to complete critical day-to-day financial and ops activities (such as payroll, retirement plan administration, bank reconciliations, state/federal filings, and insurance renewals), building and managing systems to promote smooth and consistent execution
  • Lead strategic financial projects such as modeling revenue and cash flow by country and proposing ways to increase the transparency and effectiveness of our external finance communications
  • Serve as key liaison to the Board on US finance, presenting the global financial reports to the Board Finance Committee quarterly

Financial Support to the Fundraising Team (20%)

Oversee donor grant budgets and financial reporting on grants, working with the fundraising team to streamline our systems and improve our output quality

  • Build and oversee systems to seamlessly track grants and restricted revenue from opportunity to accounting.

HR Systems and Operations (10%)

  • Create and execute systems to make sure that our HR and Talent practices are effectively implemented for the US team
  • Dive into the nitty-gritty of organizational management by overseeing research on best practices and making recommendations on new policies
  • With the support of the Operations assistant, ensure that our HR policies and procedures stay up-to-date and serve as our point person for HR compliance. Create systems and clear lines of communications to ensure policies and procedures are effectively communicated and questions are addressed.
  • Build and manage (executing or overseeing as necessary) systems to support adherence to key HR processes related to benefits tracking, recruiting, onboarding, engagement, performance management, goal-setting, and learning

Operational support for Fundraising and Communications teams (20%)

  • Manage the Operations Assistant to implement key administrative duties and build administrative systems and processes.
  • Identify, propose, and build systems and processes to improve the effectiveness of US team operations.

You are especially attuned to spotting mistakes or inconsistencies in numbers, spreadsheets, and formulas. You take pride in completing your work accurately and on schedule. WHAT YOU BRING

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience. 5-8 years experience strongly preferred- including at least 2 years of nonprofit finance experience
  • Demonstrated comfort and fluency with the fundamentals of finance, Excel, numbers, and detailed processes, particularly as applied to nonprofit finance. Enjoying these will be key to excelling at and enjoying this position day to day.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and implementing systems. You are comfortable designing, testing, improving, and smoothly running systems and processes. This could be any system that involved inputs from or served multiple people and required consistent and accurate functioning.
  • Detail orientation, particularly around numbers and processes.
  • A practical get-it-done attitude, openness to feedback and change, and ambition to learn and grow.
  • Exceptional professional judgment and integrity.
  • A preference for working independently and having full ownership over your responsibilities.

Terms

  • This is a full-time position. A two-year commitment is ideal to meet full potential professional growth at Educate!
  • Salary is commensurate with experience

  • The preferred location for this role is in our dynamic Denver office, but we will consider a remote position for strong candidates.
