Job Description:

The Opportunity

Join Stroke Aotearoa as a Community Stroke Navigator (Kaiārahi) for the Manawatu, Whanganui and Hawkes Bay regions and play a vital role in advancing our mission to prevent stroke and improve lives. You will work closely with people affected by stroke, as well as community groups, health providers and other key stakeholders, to strengthen community resilience and wellbeing. Through your advice, guidance and support, you will help connect people to the right information and resources, amplify local capability, and maximise the impact of Stroke Aotearoa’s mahi across the region.

Join a Meaningful Cause

Stroke Aotearoa New Zealand has been at the forefront of stroke prevention and recovery for over 45 years, actively promoting ways to prevent stroke and dedicating ourselves to affected individuals, their whānau and carers. Over 9,000 strokes occur in New Zealand every year and stroke is the leading cause of serious adult disability in New Zealand. Over 90% of strokes are preventable, so there is plenty of scope for you to make a tangible difference in your community, through awareness and support.  We are committed to being Te Tiriti o Waitangi aligned and fostering an inclusive environment that values diversity and equity.

About You

This position will suit someone with experience working in the health, community, rehabilitation, or disability sectors. You are an independent self-starter, who can communicate with empathy and engage effectively across all age groups, and stakeholders. Your experience working with vulnerable and diverse communities will help maximise the reach and impact of Stroke Aotearoa’s commitment to equitable health outcomes for all New Zealanders.  You will be a confident facilitator / presenter / networker and will have well-developed time management and organisational skills.

Preferred applicants will:

  • be resourceful, self-motivated, and committed to making a difference for New Zealanders,
  • have some knowledge of the effects of stroke and strategies for day-to-day management (additional training provided),
  • understand our responsibilities to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, to support equitable health outcomes in the community,
  • have excellent oral and written communication stills, and confidently facilitate training and education in the community,
  • have a tertiary qualification in a relevant subject area or equivalent experience,
  • be competent using the Microsoft Suite of products (specifically MSWord, TEAMS and PowerPoint), and information technology in general,
  • be able to work independently as well as part of a wider team,
  • be able to travel regionally with some nights away from home.
