Assistant Professor in Clinical Mental Health – Remote, USA

The Department of Counseling Psychology and Social Work, in the John F. Kennedy School of Psychology and Social Sciences at National University, invites applications for an Assistant Professor in the Clinical Mental Health program. Rank is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will have the potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship in the counseling field and a commitment to serving the university’s diverse adult student body. This position is remote. This position works closely with other faculty within the discipline and administration contributing to programmatic strategies that ensure program quality, student engagement, and success. We are looking for a candidate who can collaborate with faculty, program leadership, and operations staff to support the delivery of comprehensive, high-quality academic and clinical training experience for students. While the primary function of this role is teaching and requires the ability to teach across various courses, it also integrates service, scholarship, and clinical training experience to support student development and program excellence. The Assistant Professor reports to the Department Chair and works closely with CMHC leadership to ensure alignment with programmatic goals and accreditation standards, including those established by CACREP.

Essential Functions

Candidates will be evaluated for their level of proficiency and potential (for excellence) in teaching, scholarship, and service. The main expectations of this position include:

Teaching

  • Teach and develop online courses in the area of clinical mental health in content areas of counseling theories, assessment and testing, and diagnosis and treatment.
  • Teach clinical courses and participate in Final Presentations.
  • Maintain pedagogical and subject matter expertise in the instructor’s field.
  • Create an inclusive and positive learning environment for diverse learners.
  • Ensure course and program practices align with compliance and accreditation standards.
  • Adhere to the National University’s academic integrity policy.

Scholarship

  • Maintain a productive scholarship agenda suitable to a teaching university.
  • Engage in scholarly activities to maintain professional growth with counseling organizations such as the American Counseling Association.
  • Participate in professional development as outlined in faculty policies.

Service

  • Support school and program leadership on accreditation reviews.
  • Consult on program processes and participate in discussions to improve and innovate the CMHC program.
  • Provide regular opportunities to offer academic guidance and mentorship to individual CMHC students on training process and placements, program requirements, development of practicum and career goals, and any problems/concerns that they encounter throughout the tenor of their program.
  • Participates in any remediation processes involving CMHC students.
  • Serve as a reviewer of all program materials to ensure compliance with CACREP and state standards.
  • Collaborate and provide support to internal stakeholders on appropriate data collection, analysis, evaluation, and dissemination of reports including the regular evaluation of the students’ comportment and experience quality.
  • Serve a faculty advisor for student organizations such as CSI and faculty point of contact for student programming such as new student orientation, graduation celebration, etc.
  • Maintain professional communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in administrative meetings and project teams as requested.
  • Complete all other tasks and/or projects as assigned. 
  • Maintain membership and actively participate with professional counseling organizations such as the American Counseling Association.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • Doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP-accredited institution/program required.
  • Licensed or license eligible as a professional counselor (LPC) required.
  • Strong identification with professional counselor identity and evidence of such, e.g., membership in professional counselor organization(s), licensing activities, conference attendance, etc., required.
  • 2+ years of faculty experience in a program in a CACREP accredited CMHC program and/or clinical training administration experience in a CACREP accredited CMHC program preferred.
  • Experience with CACREP accreditation and compliance as well as ability to assist in management of such preferred
  • Experience teaching online courses in asynchronous format; experience working in a technology-driven enterprise preferred.
  • Curriculum development experience preferred.

Special conditions of employment include:

  • Background check required.
  • Travel is required at least once annually to attend the annual Commencement ceremony (if held onsite).
