  • Contribute creative concepts to client and internal projects, brainstorming with other teams.
  • Design iteratively with an easy command of typography, composition, messaging hierarchy, layout, and other fundamental principles of graphic design, and give pointed feedback to designers which directly improves their work.
  • Research and oversee selection of visual reference that inspires (Design, Page Animation, Illustration, and Photography), and build a mental reference library of styles, approaches, creators, and projects.
  • Manage Designers, delegate work to resourced Designers and Senior Designers based on workload, capabilities, and experience. Contribute to the professional growth of direct reports through mentorship, and feedback.
  • Select, brief, and direct outside collaborators to create their best work.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional work experience in the art industry
  • 5+ years of experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma) and modern digital publishing platforms such as Webflow.
  • An experienced creative portfolio demonstrating mastery of design principles - specifically typography, grid systems, layout hierarchy, color theory, and art direction for both digital and print media
  • Experienced managing designers including delegating tasks, giving constructive feedback, and overseeing visual quality.
  • Experience commissioning and directing external creative partners including photographers, illustrators, animators and external development teams
