About the Role

Title : Technical Writer-Editor II

Location: Fairfax United States

Job Description:

Overview

As a Technical Writer/Editor II, you will help the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) to meet its mission of providing national leadership, resources, and coordination to improve the health of racial and ethnic minority populations and American Indians and Alaska Natives and to eliminate health disparities. You will use your writing and editing knowledge, skills, and abilities to produce materials that are more accessible to limited English proficiency (LEP) communities, helping HHS OMH to promote programs, initiatives and administration health priorities, empowering LEP communities to access HHS OMH materials independently, and making them more informed about important health and wellness issues. Join FWI in helping HHS OHM to communicate with LEP communities more effectively, thereby improving the health and wellness of millions of LEP Americans.

FWI is expanding rapidly and has been recognized as a 2024, 2025 and 2026 Top Workplace, offering excellent growth opportunities in a collaborative environment.

Work Schedule and Location:

Remote: This full-time remote position will work Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm Eastern Time.

Responsibilities

  • Edit and proofread HHS written materials to bring them into compliance with federal plain-language guidelines, using plain-language software created by FWI to support your efforts.
  • Edit, proofread, and provide consultation on written communications, including reports, memos, emails, etc.; graphics, figures, and charts; social media content; business and technical documents; and educational materials.
  • Edit, proofread, and format contract deliverables, such as English literacy promotion materials, community outreach materials, meeting agendas, annual reports, and final reports.
  • Attend project status update meetings at least biweekly, contribute to meetings, and take meeting minutes.
  • Make revisions requested by HHS OHM by the established deadline.
  • Produce accessible English-language content across digital, broadcast, and print media.
  • Develop plain-language, English communications that make HHS programs, initiatives, and health information accessible to audiences with limited English literacy.
  • Develop materials that are written at a reading level appropriate for the target audience (generally, sixth to eighth grade reading level).
  • Use clear structure, active voice, common vocabulary, short sentences, and visual aids where appropriate.
  • Adhere to federal plain-language guidelines (see plainlanguage.gov for more information) and HHS health literacy best practices.
  • Develop materials in a manner that preserves accuracy, cultural appropriateness, accessibility, and health literacy standards to ensure materials resonate effectively with diverse LEP communities.
  • Develop communications that promote awareness of and access to HHS programs and administration health priorities among LEP communities.
  • Juggle multiple editing tasks simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, or a similar field of study.
