Position Details:

The Opportunity:

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Washington State University (WSU) seeks to fill a continuous career track (clinical track) faculty position in Shelter Medicine and Surgery for its established teaching program partnership with Seattle Humane.  This position will operate primarily out of the Seattle Humane (SHS) in Bellevue, WA. The successful applicant will be responsible for instruction of DVM students on clinical rotations in an established partnership with SHS. Clinical rotations primarily include physical exams, spay/neuter surgery, dentistry and other general practice procedures on community and shelter-owned animals. The faculty member may also provide support for the DVM students when they work in other Seattle-based community-health focused programs including the One Health Clinic and the Doney Coe Clinic. The successful candidate will join one other full-time WSU Seattle-based faculty member as well as engage with SHS staff veterinarians and technicians.

The Department is open to novel position structures, including partial/hybrid appointments, which could allow for private sector or other activities.

Specific duties will include (but may not be limited to); case management, student mentorship and evaluation, supervision of support staff, coordination and delivery of the clinical teaching services, rotation coordination with other staff and administrators at SHS and interactions with faculty and administrators at WSU-Pullman.  The successful applicant may have opportunities to participate in additional didactic teaching, scholarly activity, and academic service as desired. The distribution of effort between clinical practice, didactic teaching, scholarly effort and academic service/outreach is negotiable.

Additional Information:

Annual Salary:

Assistant Professor: $140,000 - $150,000

Associate Professor: $150,000 - $160,000

Full Professor: $160,000 - $175,000


In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range.

Required Qualifications (for all ranks):

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD) degree or foreign equivalent degree (i.e., BVSc) and have experience in shelter medicine, high-volume, high quality spay/neuter, public or academic practice; and be proficient in general medicine, surgery and dentistry.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, cultivate a positive learning environment, work collegially and collaboratively with people from all backgrounds and demonstrate commitment and relevant ability to foster community outreach, access and engagement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Specialty training in shelter medicine and experience in teaching.

 

Considerations regarding faculty rank will be determined based on the interests and qualifications of the candidate, as will, division of effort. Applicants for Associate and Full Professor must have a more substantial background in clinical practice and teaching experience.
