Purpose & Scope
Recent advances in drug discovery targeting cancer have been remarkable, and Astellas is constantly challenging next-generation modalities such as cell therapy, gene therapy, and multifunctional antibodies, as well as new cancer biology. Under such circumstances, we have successfully delivered innovative treatment drugs such as XOSPATA, XTANDI, and PADCEV to cancer patients. Furthermore, we are currently promoting drug discovery research by combining multifunctional modality and the biological understanding of TME in the Primary Focus "Immuno-Oncology" established though our Focus Area approach.
We are urgently recruiting people who will participate in the challenge of driving a paradigm shift in cancer treatment together with our team. Essential Job Responsibilities
The position is expected to lead drug discovery programs that utilizes genetically modified technology for cancer treatment, and will be in charge of the following tasks.
- In view of science and trends in the ADC related field, establish next-generation ADCs that can be expected to have innovative therapeutic benefits
- Design and synthesis of payloads, linkers and ADCs which includes investigation and analysis of patents, literatures and reviews related to our researching therapeutic area as well as carrying out organic reactions, conjugations, purifications and structure analysis to identify a compound suitable for clinical testing
- Provides appropriate guidance to younger members on complex issues that arise in ADC research. He/she will also mentor and train younger members of the team in the projects for which he/she is responsible, thereby enhancing the scientific expertise of the team.
- May be responsible for research outsourced to CROs, such as outsourced synthesis, or in research collaboration with external partners.
- Contribute to the creation of innovative Oncology Research pipeline through the above ADC research activities.
Specific Physical or Environmental Requirements
- This position is based in Tsukuba Research center and will require on-site work.

Qualifications
Required
- PhD with 5+ years or MS with 8+ years of relevant experience in medicinal chemistry.
- Strong knowledge of medicinal chemistry
- Experience in serving as a lead chemist in oncology projects
- Experimental skills necessary to carry out ADC research (both small molecule synthesis and ADC conjugation)
- Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills
- Build strong relationships with peers and partners outside
- Business level communication skill in English (Japanese communication skill is not mandatory in case applicants are non-Japanese)
