Overview
Since it was established in 2000, the Joseph C. Cornwall Center for Metropolitan Studies has been a signature component of Rutgers University-Newark’s commitment to be an anchor institution for the metropolitan area. Cornwall’s specific role is bringing the campus’s intellectual talent and other resources to bear on the challenges of revitalizing Newark and similar communities in the region and state. To this end, the Center sponsors research projects, publications, conferences, symposia, seminars, workshops, public forums, and incubates projects translating research into effective practice. In all its work, Cornwall is especially concerned with supporting the most vulnerable urban populations.
Posting Summary
Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Research Assistant (Temporary) for the Joseph C. Cornwall Center for Metropolitan Studies which will report to the Sr. Program Manager. The Research Assistant (Temporary) will support the Center’s research projects and initiatives. The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented, responsive critical thinker with experience conducting research in and studying the social sciences (for example, sociology, social or cultural psychology, social work, economics, education studies, political science, or an interdisciplinary field).
This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:
- Qualitative and quantitative data collection (e.g., ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, surveys) and analysis.
- Requires close proofreading, editing, and preparation of grant applications, manuscripts, presentations, protocols, and reports.
- Marketing the Center’s projects, programming (e.g., flyer, newsletter, and report design; email and phone correspondence; general promotion, etc.).
- Organizing public events around research projects including booking space, speaker coordination, logistics.
- Other duties as assigned

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Requires up to two years relevant experience in an administrative function, good communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong foundation in qualitative and quantitative research methods and measurements
- Experience using data analysis software, such as R, SPSS, Stata, ATLAS.ti, Dedoose, MAXQDA, NVivo, etc.
- Experience using graphic design software to prepare marketing materials
- Experience writing for a variety of audiences
- Familiarity with IRB and human subjects procedures
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous research assistant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
- Experience conducting qualitative research including conducting interviews, coding, and/or document review
- Experience analyzing quantitative data and developing charts, graphs, and other visualizations
- Both the capacity and willingness to learn new software, work routines, and research methods
- Ability to work independently and accurately without direct supervision
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Responsiveness; unless previous arrangements have been made, the RA should be willing to respond to emails within 24 hours
- Master’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
