Employment type – Temporary (12 months, with possibility of extension) – Full time (35 hours)
Salary –Legal Officer – Grade 1, Base Salary ($79,322– $90,692), plus employer’s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading
Your role
The Office of the NSW Legal Services Commissioner (OLSC) is an independent statutory office that deals with complaints about lawyers.
The Preliminary Assessment (Legal) Officer works as part of the OLSC Legal team, conducting preliminary assessment of complaints, managing a caseload of complaints, preparing decisions and determinations and conducting internal reviews of decisions and determinations where appropriate. The role also provides professional legal support and research in the relevant area/s of law to contribute to efficient and effective legal services and support the complaint handling functions of the Legal Services Commissioner.
This is a hybrid workplace role, currently performed both from the OLSC office in the Sydney CBD, and from home, with ongoing remote work arrangements at the Department’s discretion.
Essential requirements of the role
- Legal Qualifications.
- Admitted as a lawyer, eligible for admission as a lawyer or currently completing recognised Practical Legal Training (PLT).
- National Criminal History Record Check in accordance with the Disability Inclusion Act 2014
What you’ll do
In addition to meeting the essential requirements, the successful candidate must strongly demonstrate the capability to:
- Conduct preliminary assessments of complaints, which includes seeking relevant information from parties to the complaint, or third parties, as appropriate.
- Draft relevant decisions and determinations for consideration by the Legal Services Commissioner.
- Assess applications for internal review and conduct internal reviews, where appropriate.
- Undertake complaint and review related correspondence and administrative activities.
- Interpret and comply with legislation, policies and practice standards.
- Assist with the adoption and implementation of new case management processes as they are developed.
