The Opportunity:
The London Free Press, Southwestern Ontario’s leading news provider, is seeking a multimedia editor to oversee the late news cycle on its website, lfpress.com. The ideal candidate, working with a digital team and reporters in the field in London, a Postmedia regional news hub, is a nimble closer in a news cycle that begins early in the day on the region’s busiest news site. 

The night digital editor is a wordsmith, skilled at crafting SEO headlines, and unafraid of difficult conversations, editing and helping to get others to pivot to meet newsroom needs. Driven by the demands of speed, density and online subscription growth, the position requires flexibility to juggle assignments, editing and the generation of content ideas to attract and keep readers returning. Reporting to the deputy editor, the successful candidate will work closely with the assistant news editor (digital) and a mission statement that sets out the newsroom’s priorities.

Part web master, part editor, the position requires outstanding organizational and leadership skills and understanding of news that matters most to London-area readers. The ability to use digital tools to identify news needs and maximize ways to meet them is critical, as is working with the assistant news editor (digital) and the city desk.

What you’ll do:

• Keep the website updated with edited content to attract and engage readers, and reach new audiences, on shifts that start at 1 p.m. or 11 a.m. daily, with occasional weekend work.
• Help to hone our digital strategies for SEO, social, breaking news alerts and user-generated content.
• In consultation with late-day multimedia journalists, ensure assignments meet breaking content needs.
• Spot opportunities to jump on, including non-traditional explainers and live coverage that meet readers where they are. 
• Help our team develop ambitious journalism ideas, while working to hit/exceed the website's performance targets.
• Attend meetings with editors to plan and execute content.
• Help in the production of the newsroom’s regular reader newsletters.

Who you are:

• Experienced in daily digital journalism and editing, or with demonstrated ability to quickly learn, fluent in digital and social platforms and eager to work under a newsroom’s fast-paced deadlines.
• A skilled journalist and communicator, with the ability to quickly adapt to changing news needs and evolving situations requiring speed and flexibility.
• Not just a team player, but a playmaker able to spot and make wins happen.
• Familiar with industry content, style and legal standards, including the law of libel and defamation.

Compensation:
Employment offers presented to the selected candidate are based on a combination of qualifications, experience, responsibilities of the role and the candidate's location. 

Union start rate: $1514.94/weekly. 

This is a unionized position subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement. The starting salary listed in this job posting is based on the Year 1 rate outlined in the collective agreement. Offers will be made based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.
