Overview

Yale Library seeks a dynamic and collaborative manager, reporting to the Director of Monographic Processing Services with a focus on monographic acquisitions operations.  The successful candidate will guide the unit in the overall management of orders, approval plans, and invoice processing.  The work of the unit is comprised of a variety of formats, including e-books, from a variety of domestic and international sources. The person in this position will provide leadership for acquisitions operations across Monographic Processing Services, collaborating closely with managers in the department to ensure seamless workflows and operations between units.

 

The position works closely with other units in technical services and its partner departments to support and improve acquisitions processes. The incumbent will participate in establishing acquisitions practices in light of the evolving scholarly communications landscape and best practices; recommend and implement improvements to existing tools and workflows; provide technical services expertise internally to library staff and externally to the Yale community and colleagues in the profession. The incumbent will keep abreast of key trends in technical services practice to enable the development of new ideas and innovation. They will analyze trends in publishing and pricing, as well as vendor technologies and software developments, as they relate to library resource fund management, budget analysis, ordering, and invoice processing. In this role, the manager represents the department, Yale Library, and Yale University, in a variety of capacities on committees and other groups, both within and outside of Yale.

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Demonstrated knowledge of acquisitions practices.

2. Demonstrated ability supervising or directing the efforts of a high-performing team and training staff. Strong people-centered leadership and team management ability. Demonstrated ability to lead in a culturally diverse environment.

3. Excellent analytical skills. Ability to manage and assess acquisitions operations. Demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and complete assignments and projects on time.

4. Excellent communication skills. Ability to explain technical services processes and issues to non-specialist audiences.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

1. Experience managing library technical services operations, familiarity with a variety of acquisitions models and methods.

2. Knowledge of automated acquisitions processes including EDI, Embedded Order Data (EOD) bibliographic record loads, and APIs used for major vendor systems.

3. Demonstrated record of leading interdepartmental projects and bringing them to a successful conclusion in a timely fashion.

 

Principal Responsibilities

 

1. Hires, trains, evaluates, and sets annual goals for unit staff.
2. Establishes and maintains quality and consistency in workflows for acquisitions and copy cataloging
3. Assesses ordering activity throughout the library. In collaboration with colleagues, develops best practices, policies, and procedures, for effectively stewarding the procurement of collection materials
4. Makes recommendations for staffing and level of expertise needed for monographic processing services units.
5. Serves as one of the library’s main points of contact for approval plan vendors. Coordinates with selectors and collection managers and strategists on the development of approval plan profiles. Communicates with selectors and vendors about desired changes. With colleagues, develop and monitor technical specifications
6. Plays active role in projects and initiatives with technical services components as assigned.
7. May be required to assist in disaster recovery efforts.
8. Fiscal year-end vacation restrictions apply.

Required Education and Experience
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or a related graduate degree and a minimum of 2 years of professional experience.
