Job Description:

We welcome fearless thinkers.

For over 100 years, Maurice Blackburn has stood up for those who need us most. With courage and compassion, we extend access to justice to countless Australians. We look beyond the immediate challenge to support people in moments that matter across their lives, and continually push for better solutions for our clients. We invest in and empower our people to stand up for what we believe in and go fearlessly forward together.

We work on real cases, achieving important and positive results in real people's lives, which is why we are one of Australia's most respected law firms. Maurice Blackburn, experience you can count on.

About the role

We are looking for a highly motivated Law Clerk to join our Road & Work Injuries (WorkCover) team in our Melbourne office on a full-time, 12-month fixed-term contract.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a high-performing plaintiff practice supporting clients who have sustained workplace injuries. Working closely with an experienced legal team, you will provide high-quality legal and administrative support, assist with the management of WorkCover conciliation matters, help drive an exceptional client experience, and contribute to building strong relationships with union stakeholders while supporting clients from commencement through to resolution.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide legal and administrative support to an established WorkCover legal team.
  • Assist with the day-to-day management of WorkCover files under the supervision of lawyers.
  • Support the preparation and progression of WorkCover conciliation matters.
  • Draft correspondence, legal documents, summaries and other file documentation using precedents.
  • Undertake legal and factual research to support the legal team.
  • Coordinate claims documentation and liaise with clients, insurers, the Workplace Injury Commission, medical providers and other external stakeholders.
  • Attend conciliations and assist lawyers with negotiations where appropriate.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, union stakeholders and key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to refer clients to other Maurice Blackburn practice areas where appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with lawyers and legal support staff to deliver exceptional client service.
  • Proactively support the team to maintain efficiency, improve processes and achieve high performance.
  • Provide confidential administrative support, including file management, document preparation and maintaining accurate file notes and stakeholder records.
  • Contribute to mentoring and supporting junior legal support staff where required.

The experience we are looking for

We''re looking for someone who is organised, proactive and passionate about delivering exceptional client service. Ideally, you''ll bring:

  • Experience as a law clerk, legal assistant, paralegal or in a comparable legal support role.
  • Experience in WorkCover, personal injury, employment, industrial relations or another relevant legal environment.
  • Experience preparing, progressing or supporting disputed matters, with strong attention to detail and an understanding of legal processes.
  • Demonstrated experience working with clients, members and external stakeholders, with the ability to build trust and maintain professional relationships.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work autonomously within appropriate supervision.
  • Sound judgement, analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to identify when guidance or escalation is required.
  • A professional, compassionate and client-centred approach, with a strong commitment to confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Experience preparing for or participating in WorkCover conciliations, or working within or alongside a union, employee or membership-based organisation, is desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and strong general digital literacy.

Team MB Benefits:

  • Ongoing coaching and career development opportunities
  • End of Year leave, 1 day first year, 4 days after 2 years
  • Comprehensive mental health framework, including wellbeing leave (up to 4 extra days per year) and $299 reimbursement
  • 22 Weeks Parental leave with your superannuation guaranteed and back-to-work transition policy
  • Rewards and recognition platform with fitness, retail, and entertainment discounts
  • A hybrid flex working model
  • Salary Continuance & Life Insurance
