About the Position
The Director of Community Philanthropy is responsible for building, expanding, and sustaining philanthropic relationships beyond Goodwin Living's internal donor base of residents, family members, and team members. This role designs and executes strategies to engage individuals, corporations, foundations, faith communities, civic organizations, and other external partners who share a commitment to enriching the lives of older adults. Working collaboratively with the Chief Philanthropy Officer and Foundation team, the Director of Community Philanthropy will grow new donor pipelines, steward community‑based relationships, and secure philanthropic support that advances Goodwin Living's mission, strategic priorities, and long‑term sustainability.
This position requires an active, visible community presence throughout Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. Remote work would be an option for a candidate living in one of those two areas.
Job Duties
Donor Cultivation and Stewardship
- Manage a portfolio of community donors and prospects, with responsibility for moves management from qualification through solicitation and stewardship.
- Design and execute personalized engagement and stewardship plans that reflect donor interests, values, and giving capacity.
- Partner with marketing and communications to produce compelling impact stories and materials that resonate with community audiences.
Corporate and Foundation Engagement
- Identify and pursue corporate sponsorships, partnerships, and cause‑marketing opportunities.
- Collaborate with CPO and Goodwin Living program leads to secure grants that support programs, innovation, and capital needs.
- Ensure timely reporting and stewardship for corporate and foundation partners.
Collaborative Leadership and Internal Partnership
- Work closely with Foundation colleagues, Goodwin Living senior leadership, board members, and volunteers to align community fundraising efforts with organizational priorities.
- Support and engage board members and ambassadors in community cultivation and solicitation activities.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of donor activity in the CRM system and support data‑driven decision making.
Events and Community Engagement
- Lead or support community‑focused fundraising events, briefings, and cultivation experiences.
- Represent Goodwin Living Foundation at community events, networking opportunities, and public forums.
Community‑Based Fundraising Strategy
- Develop and implement a comprehensive community philanthropy strategy aligned with Goodwin Living's Foundation's fundraising goals.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a diversified portfolio of community‑based donors and prospects, including individuals, corporations, foundations, civic groups, faith communities, and professional associations.
- Expand awareness of Goodwin Living's mission and philanthropic priorities within the broader regional community.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree or Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) preferred.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible development experience, with demonstrated success in planned giving fundraising.
- Demonstrated success in community‑based fundraising, major gifts, corporate partnerships, or foundation relations
- Experience in senior services, healthcare, human services, or mission-driven nonprofit environments preferred.
- Proven ability to build trusted relationships with donors, senior leaders, and community stakeholders.
- Strong strategic thinking, organizational, and project‑management capabilities
- Experience managing donor portfolios and using CRM systems effectively; Raiser's Edge experience preferred.
- Ability to balance relationship-based fundraising with operational discipline and accountability.
- Mission-driven with a genuine passion for enriching the lives of older adults.
- Highly collaborative, collegial, and relationship-oriented.
- Experience working with boards and high‑level volunteers
- Knowledge of fundraising best practices, donor stewardship, and relationship management systems.
- Self-directed, results-oriented, and adaptable.
