Position Duties

The History Department at Loyola University Maryland invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in the History of Medicine and Health, to begin in July 2027. Geography and chronology are open. Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching (including engaging in high impact practices in History), scholarship, and service, as well as the ability to contribute to the Jesuit educational mission. The successful applicant will teach three undergraduate courses a semester, including HS 100: Encountering the Past. Taken by all Loyola students as part of the Core Curriculum, this course uses the perspective of a single historical topic chosen by the instructor to introduce students to the field of history and its importance for understanding the present. The successful applicant will also offer courses in the history of health and medicine broadly, as well as classes in their geographic and temporal expertise. They may also teach a class in the university’s Honors program.

The History Department contributes courses to twenty majors and minors across the university, including Health and Human Experience, Environmental Studies and Environmental Science, Global Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Forensic Studies, and several area studies minors. We are especially interested in candidates who can teach classes that support  these programs.

Ph.D. in hand by July 2027 and teaching experience required. Virtual interviews are expected to occur in late November/ early December, with in-person on-campus visits anticipated in January.

Additional materials, including letters of recommendation, a statement of teaching philosophy, a writing sample, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and a mission essay that expresses how applicants will contribute to Loyola's mission and vision, will be requested of applicants who advance to the interview stage. 

The salary range for this position is $73,500 - $76,000. The successful candidate must be authorized to work in the United States. Loyola University Maryland offers a comprehensive benefits package which includes health, vision, and dental insurance and contributions towards retirement and childcare. Full-time employees, their spouses, and their dependents are eligible to receive tuition remission. Loyola University Maryland also qualifies as a Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) employer.

Final compensation offers are determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, job-related experience, internal equity, and alignment with organizational budget.
