About the Role

Title: Sports Editor The Daily Telegraph

Location: Surry Hills Australia

Full time

Job Description:

What's the role?

Following an internal promotion, The Daily Telegraph is seeking a high-performing, dynamic, and strategic Sports Editor to lead our sports coverage across print and digital platforms.

In this senior editorial leadership role reporting to the Editor, you will be responsible for shaping the agenda for local, domestic, and international sports reporting. You will oversee the end-to-end editorial pipeline, from breaking online news to producing high-impact print editions, all while helping lead, mentor, and inspire a talented team of journalists, sub-editors, and digital producers.

The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, possesses sharp news judgment, and knows how to drive digital engagement while maintaining the traditional strengths of a world-class metropolitan newspaper.

Editorial Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead the editorial direction and daily strategy for all sports coverage across print and digital platforms.

  • Pitch, assign, and oversee breaking news, match reports, investigative features, and commentary.

  • Champion digital-first journalism, using real-time analytics to drive subscriber growth, audience engagement, and story placement.

  • Ensure all content adheres to high ethical, journalistic, and legal standards.

Print & Digital Production

  • Manage the daily print production of the newspaper's sports section, ensuring high visual impact, compelling headlines, and dead-on deadline accuracy.

  • Direct the digital curation and homepage presentation of sports content to maximize traffic and subscriber conversion.

  • Oversee multi-platform coverage for major sporting events, managing live blogs, video assets, and social media integration.

Team Leadership & Operations

  • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of senior reporters, sub-editors, and digital producers.

  • Roster staff efficiently to cover round-the-clock breaking news, weekend coverage, and major international tournaments.

  • Foster a collaborative, high-energy, and innovative newsroom culture.

Who are you?

  • Proven experience as a senior sports editor, news editor, or senior producer within a major media outlet, with comprehensive knowledge of Australian domestic sports (e.g., NRL, AFL, Cricket) alongside major global sporting codes.

  • Outstanding news sense with a deep understanding of local, domestic, and international sports landscapes.

  • High level of proficiency with digital publishing systems (CMS), audience analytics (e.g., Chartbeat, Google Analytics), and SEO best practices.

  • Strong background in print layout, page design, headline writing, and deadline-driven production management.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and inspire a high-performing team under intense deadline pressure.

  • Strong grasp of media law, defamation, and copyright regulation.
