Job Description:

As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you’ll take ownership of the design, build, and operation of our infrastructure across both on-premise environments and Microsoft Azure. You’ll play a key role in ensuring our platforms are secure, resilient, scalable, and easy for engineering teams to work with.

This role suits someone with deep hands-on experience who enjoys operating close to the systems that keep the business running. You’ll work closely with software engineers, security teams, and technical leadership to support high-traffic, customer-facing platforms used by customers with specialist medical needs.

You’ll have a direct impact on how we build, deploy, monitor, and secure our systems. From CI/CD pipelines and Linux servers to networking, cloud architecture, and cyber security, your work will shape the reliability and safety of our customer journey and internal systems.

We’re looking for a senior individual with strong technical judgement, a security-first mindset, and the confidence to lead by example.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain infrastructure and security across on-premise environments and Microsoft Azure Cloud.
  • Take ownership of Linux-based systems, ensuring they are secure, stable, and well maintained.
  • Build, maintain, and improve CI/CD pipelines to support reliable and repeatable software delivery.
  • Work closely with software engineering teams to enable efficient development, testing, and deployment workflows.
  • Design and manage networking components, including firewalls, load balancers, DNS, routing, and connectivity between on-prem and cloud.
  • Implement and maintain monitoring, logging, and alerting to ensure platform reliability and fast incident response.
  • Lead on infrastructure security, vulnerability management, patching, and hardening of systems.
  • Support incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement following outages or security events.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions around scalability, resilience, and disaster recovery.
  • Maintain clear technical documentation to support operations, onboarding, and audit requirements.
  • Act as a technical mentor, sharing best practices and raising DevOps and security maturity across teams.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Strong commercial experience working as a DevOps or Infrastructure Engineer in a Linux-heavy environment.
  • Deep knowledge of Linux systems administration, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
  • Hands-on experience designing and operating infrastructure in Microsoft Azure.
  • Strong understanding of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, routing, firewalls, VPNs, and load balancin
  • Proven experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using modern tooling.
  • Solid understanding of security principles, including system hardening, identity and access management, and secure networking.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management.
  • Strong experience with Terraform and Bicep, as well as other Infrastructure as Code tools and practices.
  • Experience with observability tools such as Grafana, Datadog, Prometheus, or similar.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm and effective during incidents.
  • Clear communication skills and a collaborative, pragmatic approach.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience operating hybrid environments spanning on-premise and cloud infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of containerisation technologies such as Docker and container orchestration platforms.
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git.
  • Familiarity with compliance, audit, and regulatory requirements in security-sensitive environments.
  • Experience working closely with security teams on threat modelling and cyber risk reduction.
  • Understanding of application architecture and how infrastructure choices affect performance and reliability.

Key Competencies

  • At least 5 years commercial experience in a senior DevOps, SRE, or infrastructure-focused role
  • Proven experience owning and operating business-critical systems.
  • Comfortable working independently and taking responsibility for complex, distributed environments.
  • Strong commercial mindset, with an understanding of how availability, security, and performance impact customer trust and revenue.
  • Passionate about improving reliability, security, and developer experience through automation and good design.
