The Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR); Office of General Counsel is currently recruiting to fill a hybrid paralegal position based in our Madison office, which telecommutes one day per week. The Office of General Counsel represents the Department of Revenue in tax and other proceedings, seeking fair and expeditious resolution of taxpayer appeals.
Remote/Telework up to 40%. Note: During probation you will have the opportunity to gradually increase to 40% (i.e., working remotely two (2) days per week, and will report to the 2135 Rimrock Road; Madison WI building, three (3) days per week) within 9 months (of your 12-month probation) based on performance and workload needs.

Your Role
Our paralegals support and manage collections and tax caseload for a legal staff of 10 staff attorneys and Chief Counsel of the Department of Revenue. They review and prioritize client and court referrals and requests; draft, edit, issue and serve high-quality documents for various legal actions; communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse group of coworkers, clients, opposing counsel and court personnel; approve payments for services; correctly process and apply incoming payments; investigate, research and solve issues, and assist with improvements in technology and office automation.
Position Summary

Salary Information
Salary for this Paralegal position (schedule-range 07-04) is $57,928 to $69,180 annually ($27.85 to 33.26 hourly), depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits. Use this Total Rewards Calculator to see an estimate of the total value of our competitive benefits package!
Pay will be set in accordance with the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan in effect at the time of hire. Starting pay for current state employees may vary based on applicable provisions in the Compensation Plan.
Job Details
Background Checks: Due to the nature of this position, final candidates will be subject to criminal background, fingerprint, and tax compliance checks.
I-9 Requirements: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of appointment. The Department of Revenue does not sponsor work or student visas and is not an eligible OPT employer for those with F1 visas. DOR participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I-9 information for all new employees to confirm authorization to work in the U.S.
Probationary Period: A 12-month probationary period will be required.
Qualifications
Minimum-qualified candidates will have training or experience in each of the following:
- Preparing legal documents (e.g., drafting pleadings, briefs, gathering records, organizing data, etc.).
- Providing administrative support in a legal office setting (e.g., writing letters/correspondences, database management, managing a legal calendar, data entry, etc.).
- Proofreading documents.
Well-qualified candidates will have one (1) or more of the following (in addition to the minimum qualifications).
- Research experience with public records, statutes, cases or other legal resources.
- Paralegal experience in civil or administrative cases.
- Paralegal certificate or other certificate in a legal area.
