The Open Space and Trails Coordinator provides leadership and project oversight for the Open Space and Trails department, and assists the Open Space and Trails Director and manager in planning and execution of key goals. This position will work to plan, organize, and implement core programs and activities associated with Broomfield’s Open Space and Trails. The position maintains a safe and welcoming environment for all members of the community and fellow CCOB staff members.
Schedule:
This is an exempt position and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
This hybrid position combines remote work and office hours. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday. The role also requires evening meetings or events and occasional weekend hours for special events.
Salary Range: $35.91 - $48.59 /hour

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a passion for open space and trails, with experience and a willingness to lead projects and programs related to open space, trails and urban wildlife management. They will have a strong background in community engagement, people and project management, event planning, and team collaboration. The position requires an understanding of municipal government procedures related to managing and reviewing development and construction projects. They should possess excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and be able to effectively complete complex long-term projects involving multiple internal and external partners. Experience with urban wildlife management and coexistence is helpful. Additionally, it is desired that the ideal candidate will have experience using GPS and GIS technology to support tracking open space assets and the development of management plans and policies.
Typical Day - *Please note this is not an Open Space maintenance job.
Although no day is typical, the work day may include a portion of time working from home, team meetings in the office, and/or responding to resident requests for information. Some days may involve assisting with weekend volunteer projects or evening community engagement events. This is an exempt position and not hourly. There is an expectation that some days will require additional hours beyond a typical 8 hour day and some weeks may be beyond 40 hours. Having a flexible schedule, especially during the summer months, is essential for this position. This position requires the person to address a variety of tasks that are reprioritized frequently given department and community needs.
Essential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties

Assists with property management plans and policies, restoration planning, and coordination with Parks staff on general maintenance.

Leads or assists with Capital Improvement Projects, private sector development review, and environmental review.

Evaluates policies and practices of other communities related to open space and trails issues, and effectively writes and edits policy updates and planning documents, including the Open Space and Trails Master Plan.

Reviews and prepares design studies for existing and future open space parcels.

Provides open space and trails comments for reviews of private sector development proposals.

Uses GIS and GPS technology to develop mapping inventory of trails, signage, and wildlife inventory. Coordinates with GIS staff and Implements updates to mapping.

Leads and assists with wildlife management for the department including coordinating responses to public questions and concerns, permitting of wildlife activity, and outreach and education to the public.

Documents, researches, and responds to questions and concerns from the Open Space and Trails Advisory Committee (OSTAC) as well as citizens and other interested parties.

Attends and participates in events and public meetings relevant to the department, including OSTAC meetings, City Council meetings, and relevant community boards or foundation meetings.

Supports OST staff with the coordination of volunteer programs, volunteer training, and general administration of Open Space and Trails volunteers, and communicates with Broomfield Volunteer Coordinator and other staff.

Prepares and leads presentations to OSTAC, community groups, conferences, and other regional organizations.

Leads and/or assists with the planning and scheduling of key Open Space and Trails events and annual programs, including the scheduling, planning, and delegation of various event preparation tasks to other staff members.

Leads project management of community outreach efforts, communication, public interactions, and website maintenance and communications. Leads and assists with training, orientation, and work schedules for the Open Space and Trails Specialist, Technician, and Intern positions as needed.

Works in partnership with other divisions/departments, agencies, external entities, the Open Space and Trails Advisory Committee (OSTAC), City Council, consultants, and the public in delivering effective and innovative services.

Supports and includes equity, diversity and inclusion for all Broomfield residents in the design and implementation of Open Space and Trails programs and projects.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
-
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in community planning, land use, landscape architecture, environmental policy, wildlife biology, ecology, natural resources, or a related field (required)

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field (preferred)
Experience
-
4 years experience required in community planning, land use, landscape architecture, environmental policy, wildlife biology, ecology, natural resources or related field.
Years of related experience may be substituted for required education, however education cannot be substituted for the necessary work experience. Candidates must meet the minimum required years of work experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (in addition to above requirements):
New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: in-person or virtual interviews, reference checks, and background checks, which may include local police check and sex-offender registry. If this position is required to drive a CCOB vehicle a DMV check will be required.
