Job Description:

What's the role?

The Head of News is a senior editorial leadership role responsible for overseeing The Daily Telegraph's news desk operations, newsroom content generation and daily news curation. The role leads the planning, commissioning and execution of high-impact journalism that meets the needs of The Daily Telegraph's growing subscriber audience and supports the masthead's s editorial and commercial objectives.

The position has accountability for the effective day-to-day leadership of the news desk and the chiefs of staff team, who in turn manage reporters, photographers and video teams across a seven-day roster. The Head of News is responsible for ensuring newsroom resources are aligned to editorial priorities, breaking news demands, planned coverage and major projects throughout the year.

A core component of the role is the strategic planning and delivery of set plays, editorial campaigns and major newsroom projects across the annual calendar. The Head of News works closely with senior editorial leaders to identify opportunities for distinctive, subscriber-led journalism, strengthen newsroom performance and support long-term audience growth.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the news desk

  • Manage and develop the chiefs of staff function

  • Oversee content planning and commissioning across news, photography and video teams

  • Ensure clear newsroom workflows and effective cross-team communication

  • Lead editorial responses to major breaking news events and significant coverage moments

  • Develop and execute forward plans for key news periods, campaigns and special projects

  • Content management in print production, including backbenching key news assignments

  • Use audience insights, performance data and editorial judgement to inform content strategy

  • Contribute to broader editorial leadership discussions and organisational planning

  • Coach and develop direct reports and broader newsroom talent

  • Lead with urgency, sound judgement and professionalism

Who are you?

  • Minimum 10 years' experience in newsroom environments, including substantial leadership experience

  • Demonstrated success in leading editorial teams within a large, fast-paced metropolitan news operation

  • Strong experience in news editing, commissioning, newsroom management and content planning in our publishing system

  • Proven capability in managing complex editorial rosters and multi-disciplinary teams

  • Experience delivering major editorial projects, set plays and campaign-led coverage

  • Strong understanding of audience strategy and subscriber-focused publishing models

  • Well-developed strategic planning and operational leadership skills

  • High-level communication, stakeholder management and decision-making capability

  • Strong knowledge of digital publishing, newsroom workflows and multi-platform storytelling
