Title: Full Stack Product Engineer (Design & Geospatial Focus)
Location: Remote
Department: Software
Job Description:
About City Detect
City Detect harnesses AI and computer vision to revolutionize urban management by using sensors to map the physical world and help communities respond to issues and track longitudinal changes. Founded in 2021, we recently raised a Series A and are actively partnering with major municipalities across Texas, California, Florida, and beyond to create cleaner, safer, and more livable cities. We value responsible practices, cutting-edge innovation, and collaborative community partnerships as we scale our platform and shape the future of urban living through technology.
Role Summary
You'll be responsible for the architecture, development, testing, and maintenance of our full stack systems, with particular emphasis on building intuitive, well-designed user interfaces — including interactive maps and geospatial data visualizations. Working closely with founders and team leads, you'll ensure our frontend experiences, APIs, and data pipelines are performant, reliable, and delightful to use as we grow.
What You'll Do
- Design and build responsive, accessible user interfaces using modern frontend frameworks (React or similar), including interactive maps and spatial data explorers
- Build data visualizations and dashboards — including geospatial/mapping interfaces — that help users and internal teams understand complex data
- Translate designs and product requirements into polished, production-ready UI components, exercising good design judgment along the way
- Build and maintain serverless API services using Python and FastAPI on AWS Lambda
- Design database schemas and queries in AWS RDS Aurora PostgreSQL, including spatial data with PostGIS
- Develop and optimize ETL pipelines for geospatial and business data
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and improve frontend and backend performance
- Establish best practices for UI architecture, component design, and frontend performance
Requirements
- Thrives in fast-paced startup environments, working closely with small, cross-functional teams to ship high-quality work quickly
- Solid professional experience as a full stack or frontend-leaning software engineer — mid-level through senior, calibrated on technical depth and design judgment
- Strong production experience with React (or similar) and modern JavaScript/TypeScript
- Strong eye for design — comfortable turning mockups/wireframes into pixel-accurate, responsive UI, and able to make sound design decisions independently
- Solid experience with Python or similar for API development and backend work
- Experience designing and building RESTful APIs
- Working knowledge of relational databases (PostgreSQL or similar)
- Experience with cloud platforms, particularly AWS (Lambda, RDS/Aurora, S3)
- Experience with data visualization and/or geospatial/mapping technologies (D3.js, deck.gl, Mapbox, Leaflet, PostGIS, or similar) is a strong plus and directly relevant to our product
- Solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals — data structures, algorithms, system design, maintainability
Nice to Have
- Experience processing and validating large-scale (nation-size or larger) geospatial datasets
- Familiarity with OpenStreetMap (OSM) data ingestion, processing, and quality assurance
- Experience with custom map tile generation and serving (e.g., vector tiles, H3) for large or high-traffic datasets
- Experience with design systems and component libraries (e.g., Tailwind, shadcn/ui, Storybook)
- Experience with serverless architectures and event-driven systems
- Familiarity with FastAPI or similar modern Python web frameworks
- Understanding of software security best practices, including authentication and authorization
Benefits
- Eligible for company equity incentive plan
- Fully remote position
- Unlimited PTO
- Health, vision, and dental insurance
- $100 monthly wellness stipend
- Bi-annual team retreat
- Professional development opportunities
Compensation
The base pay range for this role is $110,000 – $159,000 per year.
