Duke Health Development & Alumni Affairs (DHDAA) supports a flexible work environment by offering on-site (in office 5 days a week), hybrid (in office a minimum of 2 days a week or defined by manager), remote (work off-site 5 days a week), and flexible start and end time work arrangements. All team members must reside within a 50-mile radius of our downtown Durham office. 

If working a hybrid or remote schedule, individuals must have access to and maintain a secure home office environment with high-speed internet service and work collaboratively with others using a variety of technologies and tools. With approval from their manager, staff members may work a flexible schedule in terms of start/end times, while working within DHDAA’s core work hours between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (eastern standard). At the discretion of Managers and/or Senior Leadership, staff working a hybrid, remote or flex schedule may be required to be in the office on days and/or times outside of the agreed upon schedule.

Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs is seeking a strategic and relationship-driven fundraising professional to serve as a Director of Development for Duke Children’s.

The Director of Development, Duke Children’s reports to the Executive Director of Development, Duke Children’s and develops fundraising programs and strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward grateful patients and friends of Duke Children’s and Duke Health including the Divisions of Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Neonatology, Rheumatology in the Department of Pediatrics; the Division of Pediatric Plastic, Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery in the Department of Surgery; and the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery and Communication Sciences.

This individual will be a fundraiser, builder, strategist, and creative and collaborative problem solver. They will work to build and enhance collaborative relationships with individuals across assigned areas and Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs with a goal to advance fundraising.

Work Arrangement – Hybrid; This position is a full-time located in Durham, NC.

DEPARTMENT PERFERENCES/SKILLS

  • Preference for academic/medical/healthcare experience.
  • Campaign experience is desirable.
  • A proven track record of success in personally cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding meaningful philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, or corporations. A high level of comfort and effectiveness working with high-net-worth individuals and business executives.
  • Must have a creative and collaborative approach to problem solving, and strong critical thinking and analytical skills. A high level of energy, self-confidence, optimism, and the ability to function at peak levels in a high expectation environment are essential.
  • Superior communication skills, both oral and written. Must be able to communicate effectively with a large/diverse audience, including senior administration, board members, donors, prospects, colleagues, staff, physicians, faculty, and other constituents.
  • Must be able to navigate a matrixed organization and appreciate and thrive in a complex academic medical environment.
  • Must be a self-starter with a sense of urgency, a clear set of priorities, and the ability to adapt to and lead through changing circumstances in an environment where working across boundaries and leveraging strengths are necessary.
  • Successful candidates must have a high level of competency in collaborating with others, goal and task management, information seeking, decisiveness and judgment, ability to influence, flexibility, dealing with ambiguity, written and oral communication, listening, organizational awareness and leadership.
  • Some travel and flexibility in work hours will be necessary at times to accomplish objectives and satisfy goals.

MINIMIM QUALIFICATIONS

Education - Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience - Work requires five (5) years of progressive fundraising experience in a related organization with a proven track record in major gifts.

Campaign experience is desirable.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Work Preformed

Fundraising 70%

  • Grow and manage a pool of prospects capable of making gifts of $100k or more, from identification to stewardship. Portfolio and prospect pool will focus on grateful patients, their families and friends of Duke Children’s.
  • Identify and qualify prospects, develop and cultivate relationships, develop gift strategies for prospects in partnership with faculty and leaders, solicit major and leadership level gifts, and negotiate and successfully close gifts.
  • Coordinate and ensure effective stewardship and recognition of donors’ philanthropy.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with colleagues on all Duke Health fundraising teams to ensure comprehensive coverage of prospects and donors.
  • Write or assist in drafting proposals and other materials as necessary; assist with publicity arrangements on important gifts, programs, accomplishments, or events.

Strategic Planning and Program Implementation 20%

  • Forge strong partnerships throughout the organization, establish and maintain regular communication with faculty physicians to build a successful faculty physician grateful patient referral program.
  • Work closely with faculty leadership in assigned areas to develop compelling strategies, priorities and collaterals that align with campaign priorities and Duke Health’s central missions of research, education, and care.
  • Build annual and long-term goals for philanthropy in assigned areas.
  • Assist administrators and faculty in the identification and prioritization of institutional and departmental funding needs; keep abreast of institutional programs and plans for North Carolina Children’s Hospital.
  • Develop, evaluate, and refine plans and timetables for departmental or theme assignments; assist in planning and/or directing cultivation events or programs.
  • Partner effectively with colleagues across Duke Health.
  • Serve as a member of the Duke Children’s fundraising team and help donors see the relationship between patient care and the underlying science, research, and educational needs within Duke Health.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with colleagues on all Duke Health fundraising teams to ensure comprehensive coverage of prospects and donors.

Portfolio Development and Management 10%

  • Successfully maintain and manage a portfolio of major gifts prospects.
  • Follow procedures in coordination with the Office of Gift Records to ensure effective collecting, recording, accounting, acknowledgement and follow-up on all private gifts to assigned departments.
  • Develop contact reports and enter moves and data into tracking databases.
  • Work successfully with colleagues across the institution to collaborate on prospects with multiple interests.
  • Identify prospects for membership on the Duke Children’s National Leadership Council. 
  • Follow best fundraising and operational practices for Duke Health Development & Alumni Affairs.

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $78,161.00 to USD $156,319.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
