About the Role
Title: Deputy Managing Editor
Full time
Editorial - United Kingdom (Remote)
We’re looking for a highly skilled, proactive full-time Deputy Managing Editor to join Skift. This editor will play a central role in driving Skift’s daily publishing rhythm, ensuring our news, analysis, and newsletters maintain the accuracy, voice, and editorial rigor our global audience expects. We are actively looking for candidates based in the UK.
Why This Role Matters
You’ll manage the flow of stories during EMEA hours, edit with precision, shape pitches into sharp, high-impact journalism, and help set the day’s news agenda.
This position is remote and requires a high level of coordination and communication skills to be successful. You must be able to work independently, meet goals, set tasks in a timely manner, join meetings via video, and periodically work outside normal company hours for special events or projects.
Some of What You’ll Do
- Oversee daily publishing flow across Skift’s newsroom during EMEA hours, coordinating with editors and reporters worldwide.
- Assign, edit, and develop stories that reflect Skift’s signature style: authoritative, analytical, and rooted in the business of travel.
- Shape pitches and guide reporters to frame stories with strong news judgment and clear editorial angles.
- Copy-edit stories for accuracy, structure, and style.
- Collaborate on Skift’s daily and weekly newsletters, working closely with the managing editor.
- Maintain and update the daily editorial calendar in consultation with the managing editor.
- Serve as the managing editor’s backup, ensuring continuity across assignments, workflow, and decision-making.
- Assist with onboarding and training for new editorial hires and interns.
- Recruit and manage freelancers, including assignments, deadlines, and invoices.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree, ideally in journalism or a related field.
- 6–8 years of experience in digital publishing, with strong news judgment
- Experience writing and editing breaking news, as well as analytical features.
- A demonstrated interest in — and curiosity about — the business of travel.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with experience shaping complex stories for a smart, global business audience.
- Proven experience managing distributed, remote teams.
- Proficiency in WordPress, Beehiiv and Google Workspace.
- Experience working with both in-house editorial teams and freelancers.
- Strong organizational skills, the ability to multitask, and comfort operating on fast deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
How You Work
- You’re precise, detail-oriented, and comfortable juggling several priorities at once.
- You thrive in collaborative, distributed teams.
- You bring steady judgment and a calm presence to a fast-moving news environment.
What We Offer
- Opportunity to grow within a respected and innovative media company.
- Exposure to the intersection of media, events, and travel intelligence.
- Collaborative, supportive, and remote-friendly work environment.
How We Work
Skift's culture is diverse, cohesive, and full of people who love what they do and bring the best of themselves to work. We are remote but very connected and caring about each other.
