Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for a Compensation Specialist for a mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals, families, and communities throughout Illinois. This is a contract-to-hire, hybrid opportunity based in Des Plaines, IL, with three days onsite Tuesday-Thursday and two days remote Monday and Friday.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Compensation Specialist will support the design, development, implementation, and administration of organization-wide compensation programs that help attract, motivate, and retain talented employees. This role will analyze compensation data, provide guidance on pay practices, support job architecture and market analysis initiatives, and help ensure compensation programs remain competitive, equitable, and compliant. The ideal candidate is highly analytical, detail-oriented, and comfortable partnering across HR and senior leadership in a mission-driven environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administer and maintain compensation databases, files, and processes while ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance.

Partner with senior management and HR Business Partners to provide guidance on base pay, variable pay, promotions, transfers, job changes, and other compensation matters.

Support job architecture initiatives, job description development, job evaluations, FLSA classification reviews, salary reviews, and other compensation projects.

Conduct market research, salary benchmarking, audits, and compensation data analysis to evaluate internal equity, market competitiveness, and compliance.

Develop, interpret, and communicate compensation policies and processes while supporting compensation-related communications and training for managers and HR team members.

Review compensation requests and employee data, resolve discrepancies, maintain timely responses to compensation inquiries, and recommend appropriate actions based on market data and internal evaluation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
-
Hands-on experience administering or managing compensation programs, including salary reviews, job evaluations, market analysis, and compensation-related projects.

Strong analytical skills with demonstrated ability to interpret compensation data, salary surveys, and market trends and translate findings into informed recommendations.

Technical proficiency with an HRIS platform is required; Dayforce experience is strongly preferred, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Working knowledge of federal and state compensation laws and demonstrated ability to maintain accurate, compliant compensation practices.

Strong attention to detail, organization, communication, and collaboration skills; CCP, SHRM, or HRCI certification is a plus.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
This position offers $30-$34 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity with a hybrid schedule consisting of three days onsite and two days remote each week. Additional benefit information will be shared during the interview process.
