About the Role

Communications Manager

Job Description

  • Reports To: Communications Director
  • Hours: Part-time (16-20 hours/week)
  • Pay rate: $38.43-$54.24 per hour (depending on candidate experience)
  • Location: RemoteUnited States only; must be regularly available from 7am-10am Pacific US time, Mon-Thurs
  • Paid leave (vacations and holidays): 6 weeks per year

About the Role

ACE’s communications function is growing. We are in the process of internally delineating our growth communications (reaching new audiences and bringing in new digital donors) from our program communications (supporting ACE’s ongoing programs, maintaining digital channels, and deepening engagement with existing supporters). This role sits on the program communications side.

As Communications Manager, you will manage ACE’s public identity across all our campaigns and programs. You will lead key campaigns—including our Recommendations Release, Matching Challenges, and End of Year giving—and ensure that our communications are timely, high-quality, and mission-aligned. You will be aided by a Communications Coordinator and will work closely with the Communications Director and the wider team.

Key Responsibilities

Campaign Leadership

  • Lead communications for ACE’s flagship campaigns from a comms lens: Recommendations Release, Matching Challenges (Recommended Charity Fund, Movement Grants), End of Year Giving / Double Up Drive, and Giving Tuesday
  • Develop campaign themes, messaging, and creative direction—writing compelling copy and shaping the look and feel of each campaign, ensuring voice and tone matches with different audiences.
  • Coordinate with the Communications Director and Development Director on fundraising messaging and campaign needs
  • Manage ACE’s meta-fundraising communications, ensuring we raise at least 15% of total funds through communication channels (excluding paid advertising, which sits with the Growth Specialist)

Public Identity & Digital Channels

  • Manage ACE’s public identity across all our campaigns, programs, and digital channels
  • Lead on social media: content themes, editorial workflow, and overseeing the content calendar in coordination with the Comms Coordinator
  • Run ACE’s monthly email newsletter (ACE News), and oversee email communications for campaigns with our communications coordinator
  • Ensure key web pages are updated regularly; partner with relevant team members to identify UX improvements (for program-related pages)
  • Lead on digital media outreach, including managing relationships with key influencers (target: 5+ influencers with 50k+ following, resulting in at least 3 posts)

Team & Coordination

  • Support and develop the Communications Coordinator: weekly 1:1s, monthly and annual reviews, skills development, and ensuring they have the tools and resources to do their best work
  • Ensure our work processes are lean, simple and not duplicated as much as possible
  • Manage and coordinate timelines and deliverables across the department
  • Support and coordinate external contractors, ensuring they have the information they need
  • Manage production of communications assets and work cross-functionally with other teams

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • Excellent writer, preferably also a trained editor (AP Style)—you can shift tone and voice depending on audience and channel, and you can make animal welfare compelling to new readers
  • Strong project manager and coordinator—you thrive managing multiple workstreams, timelines, and collaborators simultaneously
  • Experience in a small, nimble team—ideally a nonprofit—with people management responsibility
  • Knowledge of effective altruism and effective animal advocacy
  • Comfortable leading digital channels: social media, email marketing (Mailchimp or equivalent), web updates
  • Experience leading communications for email marketing and fundraising campaigns, including crafting messaging strategy and creative direction, A/B testing etc

Desirable

  • Familiarity with tools such as Asana, Canva, Mailchimp, and Google Workspace
  • Experience with influencer or media outreach for a nonprofit or advocacy org
  • Familiarity and eagerness to use AI tools ethically to make your work simpler

Benefits

Our team works hard, but we also make time for our families, animal companions, friends, hobbies, and of course, our own health. Part-time staff are eligible for the following benefits:

  • 6 weeks of paid leave, split between PTO and holidays
  • Uncapped sick leave
  • Flexible scheduling
  • 3% 401k match
  • A professional development stipend
  • Paid parental, family, and medical leave
  • Paid sabbaticals every 5 years
  • A health reimbursement plan
