Behavioral Health Billing & Revenue Cycle Specialist

Location: Washington, D.C. / Maryland
Employment: Full-Time
Base Salary: $52,000–$55,000 + performance incentives
Target Total Compensation: $65,000–$70,000+

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Behavioral Health Billing & Revenue Cycle Specialist to manage billing and collections for our growing network of mental-health practices across Washington, D.C. and Maryland.

This is an ownership-focused role covering the full revenue cycle—from eligibility verification and clean-claim submission through payment posting, denial management, appeals, and A/R.

The ideal candidate understands behavioral-health billing, works effectively with commercial and government payers, and is motivated to maximize accurate and timely reimbursement. As we grow, this role may expand to support additional locations and markets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage end-to-end billing and collections across multiple practices and providers
  • Verify eligibility, benefits, and authorization requirements
  • Review coding and submit accurate, timely claims
  • Work with commercial insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare
  • Post payments, adjustments, and remittances
  • Monitor and actively manage outstanding A/R
  • Investigate and resolve denied, rejected, and underpaid claims
  • Prepare and submit appeals
  • Track timely-filing deadlines and payer requirements
  • Monitor A/R aging and follow up on outstanding balances
  • Identify recurring billing issues and implement process improvements
  • Support credentialing, payer enrollment, and authorizations as needed
  • Prepare monthly reporting on collections, denials, A/R, and revenue-cycle performance
  • Partner with clinical and operational leadership to resolve billing issues

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of medical billing or revenue-cycle experience, preferably in behavioral or mental health
  • Strong knowledge of behavioral-health CPT codes and insurance billing
  • Experience with commercial insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare
  • Familiarity with Maryland and Washington, D.C. payer requirements preferred
  • Proven experience managing denials, appeals, and aging A/R
  • Strong knowledge of eligibility, authorizations, claims submission, and payment posting
  • Experience supporting multiple clinicians and/or locations preferred
  • Highly organized, persistent, and detail-oriented
  • Strong problem-solving skills and an ownership mentality
  • Ability to analyze billing data and recommend improvements
  • Waystar, Availity, and Valant experience preferred

Compensation & Performance Incentive
Base salary is $52,000–$55,000, plus approximately $12,000–$15,000 in annual performance compensation, for target total compensation of $65,000–$70,000+.

Quarterly incentives will be tied to measurable revenue-cycle outcomes, including:

  • Adjusted collection rate
  • Reduction of A/R over 60 and 90 days
  • Denial rate and successful denial resolution
  • Clean-claim performance and timely filing
  • Accuracy and compliance

The incentive program rewards meaningful improvements in collections and revenue-cycle performance—not simply increases in patient or clinician volume. Exceptional performance may create additional compensation opportunities.
What Success Looks Like

Success means claims are submitted accurately and quickly, denials are resolved promptly, aging A/R remains low, and the organization collects as close as possible to what it is contractually owed.

We want someone who takes ownership: if a claim hasn’t been paid, you want to understand why, take action, and see it through to resolution.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in a growing behavioral-health organization and help build the revenue-cycle infrastructure needed for continued expansion.

This is a remote position.
Compensation: $52,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year

Seeking creative & collaborative humans with a passion for changing mental health care in fun and meaningful ways.

Don’t meet EVERY requirement?

Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. Ellie Mental Health is devoted to purposefully building an inclusive and diverse workplace where all of our humans can be their authentic selves! (Authenticity is one of our core values, after all…) If you’re excited about the chance to be a change-maker with us, but your past experience doesn’t perfectly align with every single qualification of the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways. Our mental health jobs need dedicated individuals from every background who are willing to care for others. And who knows, you might just be the perfect candidate for another role!

Employee Experience

We take care of our people. It’s that simple. From investing in their financial future, to providing wages that shatter the ceiling in our industry to reasonable caseload expectations we ensure that our people are happy. Happy employees do better work and provide better client care! No matter what it is that you do in your mental health career at Ellie, our clients depend on us cultivating an environment where our employees can thrive so that they can thrive too!

Y’all, jobs in mental health are tough jobs with a high risk of emotional fatigue and burnout. At Ellie, we use all of our core values of humor, creativity, authenticity, acceptance, determination, and compassion not just out in our communities, but we turn them inwards too! Our employees have clear growth paths for advancing their careers.

We have created a culture that reminds us that our employees are our leaders!

Company Structure

Ellie is a socially responsible for-profit business, which allows us to be flexible and responsive to our community’s needs. Many mental health and wellness-focused companies are non-profits or government agencies, which rely on the general public, grants, or large donors for funding. This model often results in little creativity and lower compensation for employees, promoting a work culture that just makes people feel “blah.”

Feeling blah doesn’t help employees stay motivated, engaged, or even in their jobs for a very long time! So we created a new model: one that puts flexibility, innovative decision-making, creativity, and our people first, while remaining a socially conscious and responsible for-profit business focused on changing how we treat mental health.

In short, we’re just people helping people. Wanna join the herd?
