Job Description
At The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC), our mission is to be the most essential and engaging source of news for the people of Atlanta, Georgia and the South. As we transition from a historic daily newspaper to a dynamic modern media company, we are seeking a talented Senior Editor to join our team. The AJC believes that when you cover the South, you uncover the nation. It’s a belief that’s produced award-winning journalism, elevated our community, and captured the substance and soul of our hometown.
If you're ready to make headlines with your talent and drive, we want you on our team. Apply now and be a part of the next chapter in the AJC’s transformation.
We are looking for a visionary leader to be the AJC’s next Senior Editor for Food & Dining. Atlanta is one of America’s great culinary cities and we need an editor who can bring it to life. We are looking for someone with an eclectic palate to tantalize audiences on our social channels, the AJC app and website and in the newspaper. The ideal candidate will be a storyteller and a strategist, equally comfortable in front of the camera and behind the keyboard.
You’ll guide a diverse team of staff reporters, freelance contributors and influencers, coaching each from pitch to publish so their work resonates with audiences across all platforms. As a senior editorial leader, you’ll collaborate closely with all of our newsroom teams to ensure the work has the maximum impact for audiences. As senior editor, you’ll have a chance to shape a bold vision for our food and dining coverage and to align those plans with the AJC’s mission, standards, and business goals.
Key Responsibilities
-
Editorial strategy: Use a data-driven approach to develop and implement content strategies, including planning editorial calendars and identifying topics of interest to grow the AJC’s audience and build subscribers.
-
Content creation: Oversee creation of a dynamic mix of stories — recipes, restaurant reviews, trend pieces, profiles, and projects like dining guides
-
Team management: Manage a talented group of staff and freelance journalists, mentoring them, and bringing in other diverse voices.
-
Collaboration: Coordinate cross functionally with organizational leaders to align content with overall business goals.
-
Brand development: Act as the public-facing brand leader representing AJC Food and Dining at external and industry events, as well as media engagements and appearances.
Required qualifications:
-
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and 8 years’ experience in a related field. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as a master's degree and 6 years’ experience; a Ph.D. and 3 years’ experience in a related field; or 12 years’ experience in a related field.
-
3+ years of experience in a management or leadership type role
-
Experience overseeing and coordinating the editorial activities of a publication or content platform, ensuring content quality, managing editorial teams, and overseeing the publication process
-
Expertise in and passion for food, cooking and dining strongly preferred. Exposure to global cuisines. Strong understanding of food-service industry. Ability to identify food and dining trends
-
Strong editing and writing skills, with established knowledge of AP style
-
Outstanding organizational skills with ability to manage day-to-day content output and long-term projects in a fast-paced environment
-
Excellent communication skills, including ability to work effectively with remote team members
-
Experience with public speaking and front-facing roles
