Description

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is a service agency of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and part of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet. The department provides resources and guidance to Kentucky's public schools and districts as they implement the state's P-12 education requirements. The department also serves as the state liaison for federal education requirements and funding opportunities.

The department is led by an appointed commissioner of education, who is hired by and answers to the 11-member Kentucky Board of Education. Offices are administered by associate commissioners, and divisions within those offices are administered by division directors.

The department employs approximately 425 Frankfort-based workers; 175 employees in support of the Kentucky School for the Blind (Jefferson County) and Kentucky School for the Deaf (Boyle County); and about 518 employees at the 50 Area Technology Centers across the state.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides consultative services and technical assistance to local school district personnel and other state and private educational agencies in the development, coordination, implementation and monitoring of educational programs.
  • Provides leadership, consultation, technical assistance, support and guidance in the design of services, assessment, curriculum, instructional technology and methodology for children identified as a member of the Primary Talent Pool or identified as gifted or talented.
  • Facilitates State Advisory Council Gifted and Talented Education (SACGTE) meetings and other meetings with external and internal partners.
  • Collaborates with KDE staff on special projects, such as State Consolidate Monitoring; represent KDE in collaboration with other agencies regarding services to Gifted and Talented students.
  • Plans, coordinates, facilitates and delivers appropriate professional learning opportunities for teachers, administrators, Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) staff and related partners on Gifted and Talented issues concerns and best practices.
  • Identifies program models, facilitate legal issues and problem-solve implementation concerns for Gifted and Talented programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

In accordance with KRS 161.220 the applicant selected for this position will become a member of the Teachers' Retirement System.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a master's degree in education or a related field.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Three years of professional experience in education, career and technical education, or a related field.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Current Rank II or Rank I certification by the Department of Education or Education Professional Standards Board will substitute for the required educational requirement. Additional professional experience in the field of education will substitute for the required educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed in an office or school setting. Travel may be required.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
