Advocate - F/T, 35 hrs per week, on-site Riverhead, NY office. Opportunity for one day remote after successful 90 day introductory training period.

The Advocate provides support services primarily at Suffolk County Family Courts and other local courts as needed. Duties include assisting clients with filing petitions for orders of protections, custody and child support, and other Family Court petitions as needed. The Advocate will communicate with court personnel, court officers, attorneys, and police officers on the client's behalf. The Advocate also provides emotional support to the client throughout the process.

Responsibilities Include:

Assisting victims of domestic violence, intimate partner violence and/or sexual assault in a trauma informed manner in the following areas:

  • Education the client on family court procedures and provide accompaniment to the Family Court/police/probation.
  • Review safety planning
  • Introduce systems for reimbursement offered through Office of Victim Services and assist with the application/follow up process.
  • Provide other Network services and community Resources as is appropriate

Schedule appointments and attend meetings with shelter clients to review and follow cases.

Maintain accurate statistics and permanent records of services rendered or referred.

Provide crisis intervention for victims calling into the hotline.

Coordinate prevention and awareness services and presentations to the community as requested and provide support services for fund raising activities.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual English Spanish required. Strong oral and written skills in English and Spanish.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred, HS diploma or equivalent with at least one year of crisis interventions services
  • Valid driver's license, ability to travel locally (mileage reimbursed)
  • Familiarity with legal justice system.
  • An understanding of domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault, human trafficking, crime victimization and resulting trauma, victims' rights, and cultural sensitivity.
