Job Title: Writing Center Specialist
Department: Success Center
Reports to: Writing Center Coordinator
FLSA: Exempt
Hours: Monday through Thursday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Friday 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM (extended hours when requested)
Location: Remote
Job Summary
The Writing Specialist is responsible for providing exceptional customer service and is accountable for attaining performance goals associated with new, continuing, and resuming students while upholding academic integrity. In addition, this position is responsible for executing all elements of a proactive student outreach strategy.
Essential Job Tasks Additional duties may be assigned.
- Provides writing coaching to students through students’ own essays and papers.
- Facilitates the successful transition of new students into their first courses by providing guidance and resources.
- Provides proactive advisement and coaching for continuing students.
- Assists students in the development of learning styles and study skill techniques.
- Provides guidance to students with academic issues.
- Provides limited course content coaching and referrals for subject specialist tutoring.
- Provides assistance to students in finding academic resources.
- Creates and conducts live and/or recorded tutorials that focus on different aspects of writing and APA formatting.
- Promotes, maintains, and enhances workplace culture within the Success Center and the university.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge
- English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
- Academic Processes - Knowledge of university guidelines, course descriptions, and academic terminology.
- Clerical - Knowledge of office administrative procedures including word processing, managing files and records, typing, and other office procedures.
- Computer - Knowledge of basic computer processes including word processing, web browsing, and Microsoft Office including Basic Microsoft Excel.
Skills
- Critical Thinking - Uses logic and reasoning to look at different types of information in order to make conclusions and work through problems.
- Reading Comprehension - Understands written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
- Research - Locates key facts and information in order to learn more about different types of information.

Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Writing, English, or related areas required. Master’s degree a plus.
- One (1) to three (3) years of teaching experience in an educational setting preferred.
Equipment Used
- Office equipment includes computers, telephones, and printers.
- Software used to include Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Blackboard, and internal database software.
- Secure and reliable internet is required for this position.
