The Division of Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success is seeking to hire a Tutoring Coordinator. VCU Campus Learning Center Tutoring is a peer-facilitated academic support program. The tutoring program supports courses across the university in various majors to help students feel confident in learning course material. CLC tutors have successfully completed the classes to which they are assigned, meet mandatory GPA requirements, and complete extensive training as part of their job. A tutor's basic job responsibilities include holding one-on-one tutoring sessions to support student learning, participating in Drop-In Tutoring to assist students without an appointment, and maintaining administrative records of their individual appointments.

Supporting the Associate Director in providing tutoring support to address the needs of students across the University, the Tutoring Coordinator supports the management of the tutoring program in the Campus Learning Center. The primary role of the coordinator is to provide direct supervision to the student staff. The Coordinator is often the first point of contact for tutors who need assistance.

Core Responsibilities:

Tutor program development (50%):

  • Conduct orientation training and ongoing training sessions throughout the semester for tutors
  • Complete weekly observations of tutoring appointments and provide observation feedback to tutors
  • Facilitate guided reflection with tutors including post-observation meetings
  • Assist in the administrative functions of the tutoring program

Provide direct supervision and support to tutors (40%):

  • Oversee the tutor student staff including supervising their administrative duties and approving their hours in RealTime
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection process for tutors
  • Hold one-on-one supervision meetings with tutors to support student staff job functions, personal development, foster relationship building, and career growth
  • Conduct end of semester supervision evaluations with student staff

Campus Learning Center programming (10%):

  • Participate in university wide events to promote the department and division
  • Represent the Campus Learning Center at events, including classroom visits
  • Assist in the planning and execution of Campus Learning Center events

Qualifications

Minimum Hiring Standards:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Experience working with university students and student success based in a learning centered environment. This could include experience in a student position or internship
  • Ability to manage and organize student staff
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to engage and connect with students, staff, and faculty
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite or Google Suite

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or related field
  • Master's degree in progress or complete
  • More than two years working in a learning support center
  • Experience in staff management and organization, including supervising undergraduates
