About the Role

Senior Manager, Content and Storytelling

PHA Vision: A healthier America powered by good food for all.

Organizational Background:

At Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), we are advancing equitable access to nutritious food for all in America to lead healthy lives. As a national nonprofit founded alongside Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign in 2010, PHA works with community organizations, corporations, foundations and governments to build healthier communities through nutritious food.

Since our founding, PHA has made water the most purchased beverage in America, removed 7 trillion calories and literally tons of salt, fat and sugar from the food system. We have partnered with more than 500 partners across the public, private, nonprofit and charitable food sectors and are a credible convener and collaborator.

Most recently, we’ve connected families across the country with over 45 million servings of produce as part of our commitment to bring 100 million servings to underserved communities. And we have an ambitious vision to build Good Food Cities by advancing strategies to double consumption of fruits and vegetables in 15 U.S. cities by 2030, starting with Indianapolis, Indiana; Chicago, Illinois; and Denver, Colorado.

Position Summary:

PHA is seeking a Senior Manager, Content and Storytelling with a strong background in non-profit communications to join our Marketing & Communications team and share the stories of PHA’s work and impact with our audiences, primarily through our digital channels.

We are looking for someone who can own and lead our content creation process from start to finish. This includes maintaining the organization’s editorial calendar, identifying stories and content topics by working collaboratively and closely with our Programs and Development teams, planning for content collection during key moments and events, conducting interviews as needed, and writing blog, email and social media content.

The position will join a highly motivated and capable team that is based across the country, drawing from their own personal experiences as well as professional and academic expertise to drive food systems change.

PHA’s staff is fully remote and this candidate can be based out of anywhere in the U.S.

  • Lead the strategic content development process in close collaboration with the rest of the Marketing & Communications, Programs and Development teams, including developing content ideas and brainstorming campaign ideas during key moments of the year.
  • Write and edit for a wide range of content formats – including blog posts, emails, newsletters, social media, website, press materials, advertising copy, marketing collateral, programmatic assets, and development communications.
  • Manage the storytelling content collection process, including planning and logistical support for storytelling trips with community-based organizations across the country. Some travel would be required; roughly once a quarter.
  • Interview external beneficiaries of PHA’s work, as part of storytelling content collection. This also includes tracking stipend amounts and working with the Finance team to adequately compensate interviewees.
  • Maintain PHA’s quote and storybank, allowing staff across the organization to access content for their various needs and audiences.
  • Project management of content process – updating internal project management tools, coordinating with other teams and external beneficiaries, providing updates in meetings.
  • Supervise the Manager, Social Media, supporting their growth and working to ensure that social media messaging is in line with our overall content strategy.
  • Supervise and delegate to two external consultants: a graphic designer (responsible for creating most of the visual content to accompany our written storytelling content) and a digital communications contractor (responsible for the technical building of emails in Pardot email marketing platform and for updating our website, including posting blogs, in our CMS).

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

  • 3 - 5 years of demonstrated experience in nonprofit communications, with a particular focus on developing strategic communications plans and telling meaningful stories that drive action.
  • Knowledge and understanding of marketing and branding best practices across digital platforms.
  • At least 2 years of experience with managing direct reports.
  • Excellent writing and communications skills across various audiences and channels, including blog posts, emails, newsletters, social media, website copy. Ability to showcase a portfolio of high-quality work.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to form new relationships and work effectively and collaboratively with colleagues at all levels as well as external partners and beneficiaries of PHA’s work.
