Job Description:
This is a hybrid position requiring two days a week in office, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and as needed.
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
The Recording Academy is seeking a qualified and passionate Senior Director, Advocacy & Public Policy. Working closely with the DC-based Academy staff and outside legislative consultants, you will advocate for the interests of individual music creators (singers, musicians, songwriters, and studio professionals represented by the Recording Academy). This includes before Congress, state legislatures, and other governmental agencies.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Represent Academy membership before Congress, including lobbying, attending stakeholder meetings, hearings and markups, and related duties.
- Work with other governmental agencies that affect Academy membership to advance creators’ rights.
- Support the Academy’s state and local advocacy work, including coordinating with the Director of Regional Advocacy & Member Engagement, liaising with the Academy’s 12 regional chapters, and supervising outside lobbyists.
- Work closely with the Chief Advocacy Officer and outside legislative consultant to develop federal and state policy recommendations.
- Prepare briefing papers, talking points, and member reports and calls regarding related advocacy activities.
- Draft and review articles for Recording Academy publications and websites.
- Assist in planning and executing advocacy events including congressional briefings, the annual GRAMMYs on the Hill Advocacy Day, and Music Advocacy Day.
- Participate in and provide leadership for policy coalitions and working groups with aligned external stakeholders.
- Provide strategic advice and support for the GRAMMY Fund for Music Creators, the Academy’s political action committee.
- Some travel required.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in public policy, music business, or related field.
- 10+ years of experience working on Capitol Hill or in government relations.
- Experience with Judiciary Committee or IP issues preferred.
- Strong established relations with congressional staff.
- Experience with state advocacy preferred.
- An interest in music and a desire to help the individuals who create it.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and use discretion regarding Academy advocacy matters.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
- Must be detail-oriented with outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven presentation and interpersonal skills.
- Availability and willingness to work extended hours during peak periods.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
The starting salary for this position is $116,200 to $130,700 per year, benchmarked against industry standards. Salaries for positions required to be in specific geographic locations reflect the corresponding labor market.
