SUMMARY
Relay Graduate School of Education (Relay) is an accredited not-for-profit institution of higher education serving thousands of educators from across the country, from pre-service teachers to system-level leaders. The Professor, Curriculum Design, Secondary English Language Arts (ELA) designs and implements new and revised courses while teaching a subset of students each term. Their work impacts all students in courses taught and programs supported within the department. The Professor, Curriculum Design, Secondary ELA reports to the Department Chair, Secondary ELA. As Relay's programmatic approach evolves to support Relay students, the scope of this role will evolve to ensure successful program delivery. The Professor, Curriculum Design, Secondary ELA will provide critical input to Relay's overall approach to teacher preparation and must be comfortable being adaptable and navigating a shifting landscape as Relay continues to improve its programmatic approach to providing support to its students.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential responsibilities of this position, while not limited to the following, will include:
Curriculum Design Leadership (40%)
- Develop engaging and effective asynchronous and synchronous learning experiences, continuously improving courses based on student feedback and performance data.
- Partner with design professors, instructional designers, and the accreditation team to ensure program alignment with standards, regulations, and accreditation requirements.
- Proactively monitor and update courses to meet evolving state standards, regulations, and accreditation criteria.
- Actively solicit and incorporate input from a wide range of stakeholders, including students, faculty, and administrative staff, to optimize program effectiveness.
Teaching Responsibilities (35%)
- Teach 1-3 courses per term, delivering engaging and effective instruction to classes of approximately 50 students.
- Adapt to varying teaching schedules, including evening classes (Tuesdays/Thursdays 5:30-8:00 CT) and occasional Saturdays.
- Actively engage in peer observation of teaching and provide/receive constructive feedback to improve instructional practices.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to enhance curriculum implementation and effectiveness through observation, feedback, and shared best practices.
- Provide guidance and resources to help students achieve their learning goals and reach their full potential within your courses.
Center Student Experience (15%)
- Develop and implement strategies to create positive and supportive learning environments in all department courses and programs.
- Ensure all department courses align with organizational mission and vision statements.
- Design and deliver courses that prioritize student needs, learning preferences, and feedback.
- Regularly solicit and incorporate student feedback to enhance course content, delivery, and overall effectiveness. Implement changes based on data and student input.
Management (5%)
- Assign tasks, provide guidance and feedback, conduct performance reviews, and ensure timely project completion for assigned consultants.
- Allocate projects and tasks to consultants according to their skills and availability, ensuring efficient utilization of resources.
- Provide regular feedback and conduct performance reviews for part-time design consultants.
Institutional Service (5%)
- All Relay faculty are expected to serve the institution through committee, working group, and/or board membership.
QUALIFICATIONS
First and foremost, the Professor, Curriculum Design must share the Relay community's commitment to working together to improve student growth and achievement through phenomenal teacher preparation grounded in diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. This includes providing teacher preparation programs that set novice teachers up to succeed in the classroom from day one; leadership programs that train new and veteran school and district leaders to best serve their school communities; and teacher-facing professional education that provides ongoing learning to educators. Additionally, for this position, we're looking for candidates who possess a combination of the following skills:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience in curriculum design.
- 5 years of classroom teaching experience in Secondary ELA.
- Graduate degree (masters or doctorate) in a relevant educational field.
- Knowledge of current research and best practices in Secondary ELA and the Science of Teaching Reading.
- Experience teaching or coaching adult learners through collegiate courses or school-based professional development.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build collegial relationships with diverse individuals and teams.
- Proven project management skills with the ability to synthesize information from various sources.
- Availability to teach two nights a week and up to two Saturdays per term.
The following qualifications are highly preferred:
- Experience with online teaching and/or curriculum design.
- Understanding of the evolving educator preparation landscape nationwide.
- Experience designing or teaching within the Canvas learning management system.
- Engagement with national education organizations.

COMPENSATION
Relay is committed to creating and maintaining a compensation and benefits system that supports our ability to recruit and retain a diverse and talented team. As we make decisions about compensation, we will be guided by the following values: clarity, consistency, and internal equity. The salary range for this role is $87,057-105,339. New hires will be offered a salary at the starting point of the range, $87,057 to allow for an equitable starting salary process and continual salary growth during an employee's time at Relay GSE.
To ensure internal pay equity:
- Relay does not currently differentiate starting salary offers based on years of experience,
- All staff salaries will be capped at the salary range maximum, and
- Relay does not negotiate salary offers.
