Job Description

Multilingual Desktop Publisher and Formatting/Text-Preparation Specialist  

Location: Remote 

Type: Freelance Contractor 

Global Language Strategies, based in Virginia, is seeking a talented and detail-oriented Multilingual Desktop Publisher and Formatting Specialist (remote) to join our team as a contractor. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in multilingual desktop publishing, experience in working with various file formats, and be familiar with text preparation for computer-assisted translation tools as well as OCR software. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the GLS Program and Project Management Team to ensure the seamless adaptation of materials for different languages and cultural contexts. 
 

Key Skills & Responsibilities: 

1. Convert highly complex PDF files to an editable Word, Excel, or PowerPoint format utilizing OCR software. 

2. Arrange text, images, and other file-specific details in such a way that the file can be processed in CAT tools, such as Trados. 

3. If required, perform additional formatting of files before delivery of the final documents to the customer to account for text expansion and other changes that may have occurred during the translation and editing process. 

4. Collaborate closely with GLS Project Managers. 

5. Maintain the highest standards of quality and accuracy in all projects. 

 

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen residing in the United States. 
  • Fluency in English and at least one foreign language. 
  • Must be willing to undergo a background investigation for Public Trust (moderate level) clearance. 
  • ​Experience working with different scripts and fonts for languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, Russian, and other non-Latin alphabets. 
  • Proficiency in PDF conversion and desktop publishing software, such as ABBYY FineReader, Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, FrameMaker, QuarkXPress, and Microsoft Publisher. 
  • Strong attention to detail and focus on accuracy and layout consistency, especially when handling multiple language versions of the same document. 
  • Strong ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate effectively with the GLS Team in a remote team environment, ensuring clear communication throughout all stages of the project. 
  • Previous experience (2 to 3 years minimum) with text preparation for CAT tool processing is required. 
  • Familiarity with Section 508 and other government accessibility and compliance standards, ensuring that materials meet the required accessibility guidelines, is required.
