Job overview and responsibilities
As a passionate consumer of news and strong writer, the Manager - Consumer Public Relations is confident and comfortable engaging with reporters on a daily basis and is able to proactively seize opportunities that secure earned media coverage. The Manager will also partner closely with teams within United to provide strategic communications counsel, develop creative plans to launch new products/services and effectively build the airline's reputation. The Consumer PR team supports commercial and customer facing functions including MileagePlus, Kinective Media, network planning, customer experience, digital technology and onboard product. There are two open positions for this opportunity and it is considered Chicago-based hybrid, requiring two days in office per week.
- Establish and maintain relationships with reporters across business, broadcast, lifestyle, technology, advertising trade and travel/aviation outlets for them to cover United's routes, commercial projects, customer experience and digital tools
- Develop media materials, including press releases, talking points and pitches, designed to secure earned media coverage for United
- Collaborate with stakeholders across United to create broader integrated communications campaigns to announce new products, services and other company initiatives
- Manage junior team member, providing day-to-day work direction, sharing performance feedback, giving recognition, and communicating effectively
- Support on-call and crisis communications efforts
Qualifications
What's needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):
- Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Business or related field
- 5-6+ years of full-time communications experience at a corporation or PR agency
- Passion for news, culture and sourcing, pitching and placing earned media stories
- Ability to interface with all levels of employees and management
- Excellent newswriting skills
- Entrepreneurial mindset and positive, results-oriented attitude
- Ability to think critically, problem-solve quickly, anticipate needs and tenaciously pursue a goal
- Highly organized and detail-oriented
- Ability to deliver results under pressure in a high-stakes, rapidly changing environment
- Poised executive presence and comfort providing communications counsel to senior leaders
- Ability to travel up to 20%
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
- Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
- Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):
- Recent experience working in a fast-paced external communications role at a Fortune 100 company
- Interest or experience in travel and aviation
- Relationships with top-tier national lifestyle, broadcast and business reporters
- Experience pitching and placing stories for top-tier podcasts and other non-traditional media verticals
- Experience leading a team
The base pay range for this role is $99,750.00 to $129,924.00.
The base salary range/hourly rate listed is dependent on job-related, factors such as experience, education, and skills. This position is also eligible for bonus and/or long-term incentive compensation awards.
