Description of Duties:

We are seeking temporary part-time instructors with a computer science background to teach introductory high school courses via distance education. Advanced knowledge of subject topics is not required.

Instructor positions are available for the following courses:

Fall Semester:

  • Honors Intro to Artificial Intelligence - Monday-Friday - 9:50AM - 11:00AM

  • Honors Game Art and Design - Monday-Friday - 12:05PM - 1:15PM

Spring Semester:

The Honors Introduction to Artificial Intelligence course will cover the following topics: how AI has been portrayed in popular culture, how AI systems interact with humans, and the ethical considerations surrounding potential societal harm from inappropriately designed, trained, and/or applied AI systems. Students will have opportunities to experiment and compute as they explore and solve problems associated with AI. Students begin the course with no prior knowledge of coding and complete an introductory, ethical project using features of AI.

The Game Art and Design course will cover the following topics:  history of video games, game engines, and core principles of art, visual/audio design, and storytelling. Students will create original sounds and 2D/3D models, design virtual worlds, address real-world problems through game design, and use AI tools to develop unique art based on personal interests.

The NCSSM Connect program offers live, synchronous virtual courses taught by NCSSM faculty to students in their local high schools across North Carolina. During class, Connect instructors use group activities and cutting-edge instructional technology to facilitate active participation, project-based learning, and cross-site collaboration with students from around the state. Students can interact with others from the mountains to the coast. Our NCSSM Connect program allows smaller, rural schools to offer AP and honors-level courses that may otherwise be unavailable.

The position reports to the Director of Instructional Leadership and is responsible for providing instruction for an NCSSM Connect distance education computer science/ethical technology course via Zoom or other interactive videoconferencing mediums. Using a combination of a pre-developed curriculum, digital assets, and materials developed by the instructor, the instructor will deliver the course live/synchronously to one or more sites in North Carolina. Daily broadcasts will be seventy minutes long.

General duties include: developing and communicating to students clear course objectives and goals; planning and developing an instructional program that helps students assimilate specific course content and skills; regularly monitoring and evaluating students' progress, providing them with resources and feedback on their performance; structure and manage an environment conducive to learning; model for students responsibility to self and others; follow the School's philosophy, policies, and procedures; visit each site one or more times during the semester; participate in professional development and personal intellectual growth activities.

This position offers the option to work remotely.

Preferred experience includes teaching in the computer science or a related technical field, preferably with secondary students or undergraduates at the freshman/sophomore level, and a commitment to engaging gifted and motivated students in virtual, synchronous instruction.

Enthusiasm for student-centered, hands-on labs or projects, and familiarity with educational technology to deliver interactive synchronous remote courses.  Preparation for teaching in an online environment, as demonstrated by training or experience.

A Master's degree in Computer Science, Instructional Technology, or a related technical field, or a Master's degree in Education with a technical Bachelor's degree.

Additionally, an undergraduate degree in a field related to technology, computer science, education, or the humanities, and comfort with basic computer programming and introductory data manipulation/statistics.
