Job Description:

Summary:

The Director of Development is a member of the College of Arts and Sciences Advancement team and is responsible for executing on fundraising, solicitation, and visit goals, which are set annually. The position directly manages a curated high-level prospect portfolio of current and prospective donors for CAS and the American University Museum, with a focus on donors capable of making gifts of $100,000+. The Director reports to and works closely with the Assistant Dean of Advancement, CAS and is involved with fundraising strategy, goalsetting, communications, advisory board management, and development-centric events. The Director will be required to work collaboratively with faculty and staff of the College and AUM, central development and alumni relations staff, and peers and colleagues in other academic and University units.

Essential Functions:

  1. Major Gift Prospect Identification, Cultivation, & Solicitation
  • Strategically determine and focus on key markets, using data to drive prioritization, and develop strategies to effectively discover and qualify prospects.

  • Meet annual goals for personal performance, established in consultation with manager based on existing pipeline and overarching divisional goals.

  • Develop programs and strategies to identify, prioritize, cultivate, and solicit key prospects with capacity of $100,000+.

  • Personally manage a portfolio of major gift prospects, including alumni, foundations, corporations, parents, and friends.

  • Communicate internally and externally in a timely, professional, and efficient manner as it relates to all ongoing cultivation and closure of gifts.

  • Follow established standards for the documentation and acceptance of gifts.

  • Record all contacts, strategies, and proposals in alignment with divisional expectations.

  1. CAS Advancement Team Support
  • Work in conjunction with Assistant Dean of Advancement and other members of the CAS Advancement team to keep team tracking mechanisms up-to-date, attend team meetings, stay updated on evolving CAS and AU updates and news, work with the CAS Advancement team to ensure accurate recording of gifts received, review ongoing stewardship, and participate in the data management for the CAS Advancement team.

  • This role will also be involved in supporting the ongoing training and development of the team's Assistant Director of Development and the Development Coordinator - Major Gifts.

  1. Major Gift Prospect Stewardship
  • Responsible for developing and executing comprehensive stewardship strategies to recognize and engage major gift donors, ensuring their continued support and alignment with the organization's mission.

  • Creating personalized stewardship plans and collaborating with internal teams to deliver impactful reports and communications that demonstrate the value and impact of major contributions.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Salary Range:

  • $100,000-$120,000 annually.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

  • 5-8 years of relevant experience.

  • Progressively responsible development experience with at least four years of primary focus on identifying, cultivating, soliciting, closing, and stewarding gifts.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree or equivalent.

  • 5-8 years of relevant experience.

Travel Required:

  • This position may require travel outside the Washington metropolitan area 20-40% of the time.
