The role:
In this position. you will generate drawings, problem solve grade issues with computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) and review projects in design. You will support our agency's mission by ensuring we are building a safe and reliable transportation system. In this role, you get to brag about your work, be proud of the projects you helped complete and can enjoy navigating them for years to come. Hybrid remote work available - the person in this position will mainly work in the office and in the field, but there are some remote work opportunities.
This is a limited duration appointment that is expected to last approximately two years. Limited duration appointments are benefits eligible and have a designated maximum length of service. The limited duration appointment has the potential to become permanent.
We may also fill this position as a rotational assignment open to current State of Oregon employees. Rotation candidates are required to meet the position's minimum qualifications. Rotational assignments do not have the potential to become permanent without a separate competitive recruitment process. You must have your manager's and appointing authority's approval before applying for this assignment.

A day in the life:

Prepare geometric designs and create working drawings for construction projects.

Coordinate and prepare construction details including drainage design adjustments, structure component elevations, and sign, signal and illumination footing elevations.

Supplement two-dimensional and three-dimensional base maps and three-dimensional terrain models of existing ground on the CADD.

Design digital terrain models for new roadways, prepare finished grades, cross-sections and profiles as hard copy drawings.

Perform quantity calculations and prepare cost estimates for contract change orders, claims and monthly pay estimates.

Document "as-built" conditions.

Occasionally use different methods, other than CADD, in the preparation of geometric design and construction details.

Assemble project information such as control networks, local property surveys and deeds, existing topography, location design data and utility mapping and provide the information to survey crews and inspectors.

Coordinate all assigned phases of design work between the project office and contractor.

Communicate daily with inspectors, surveyors, the assistant resident engineer, project coordinator and the contractor regarding progress and design issues.

Review preliminary plans for accuracy and completeness, record comments and ensure comments are responded to.

Work is performed in both an office environment and in the field and may require long hours, working in adverse weather, being near heavy traffic and construction equipment, moving around rough terrain, overnight travel and lifting up to 50 pounds.

The salary range listed is the non-PERS monthly salary range. If you are already a participating PERS member or once you become PERS eligible, the salary range will increase by 6%.

Minimum qualifications:
Completion of and passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
OR
A bachelor's degree in civil or transportation-related engineering.
Special qualifications:
Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

This opportunity is scheduled to last approximately two years but could change based on business needs.

Rotational candidates must meet the position's minimum qualifications to be considered. The successful candidate may be eligible for work out of class compensation within this classification's salary range.

The successful candidate will remain eligible for cost-of-living increases and regular salary adjustments, as applicable, and will remain in their permanent classification, salary range and representation.

Relocation will not be paid. Employee will return to their permanent position upon completion of this assignment. However, the assignment can be terminated at any time without prejudice by the sending manager, receiving manager and/or employee.

Effective Jan. 1, 2025, the compensation plan for this position will be adjusted to reflect a cost of living adjustment (COLA) of 6.55%. The salary listed in this posting does not reflect the cost of living adjustment.
