Job Description:

Democracy Prep Public Schools is currently seeking an Accountant for a full-time position located in our New York City home office. The position has a hybrid work schedule, with 3 days required in office and 2 days working remotely. The candidate will join our Finance and Accounting team and will be primarily responsible for handling day to day accounting issues including account reconciliation, month/quarter/year-end close, financial reporting, bank reconciliations, payroll and accounts payable. The candidate will be a self-starter, highly motivated, independent thinker, display a strong sense of urgency and demonstrate the ability to prioritize responsibilities.

Democracy Prep Public Schools currently operates 17 tuition-free, high-performing schools in New York, Las Vegas and San Antonio educating over 5,800 scholars in K-12th grades. Our mission is to educate scholars for success in the college of their choice and a life of active citizenship.

Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain all financial schedules related to revenue recognition, rent, accruals, payroll, fixed assets and prepaid expenses.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts and prepare journal entries for the monthly, quarterly and annual accounting close.
  • Assist in monthly bank reconciliations and monitoring of cash flow.
  • Process payroll in a timely and accurate manner. Validate and reconcile all payroll entries before transmission. Respond and address payroll inquiries.
  • Create financial reports and perform financial analysis for Senior Management, Board of Trustees, Finance and Audit Committees.
  • Review the company's financial data to identify and resolve discrepancies.
  • Record, process and reconcile vendor invoices with proper coding, payment amounts and vendor information; troubleshoot payments issues.
  • Work with external auditors to facilitate audit requests, prepare annual audit schedules and submissions, as well as IRS Form 990 reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and devise and implement financial policies and procedures to support such compliance.
  • Support the Controller in managing the day-to-day activities of the accounting and finance department.
  • Perform ad hoc analysis and projects as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. Please note that we request transcripts as a part of our onboarding process
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CPA candidate preferred.
  • 5+ plus years of experience in non-profit or private industry accounting, with track record of progressive accounting positions and responsibilities.
  • Thoroughly proficient in Microsoft Excel, with extensive knowledge of Intacct, FinancialEdge, Abila MIP or a similar accounting program. Proficiency in Zenefits or similar payroll system a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting standards and procedures.
  • Commitment to timely task completion, with ability to establish work priorities and meet deadlines are essential.
  • Strong attention to detail, while multi-tasking successfully.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.

Compensation

Salary is $75,000-$80,000 and commensurate with your experience. Democracy Prep employees are provided with a benefits package that includes medical, vision, and dental insurance, 403b retirement matching, parental leave, a smartphone, and a laptop.
