Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Technical Underwriting Analyst!
About the role
Symetra is looking to expand our technical underwriting department as we leverage technology to win in the individual life market. The Technical Underwriting Analyst - Life designs, configures, and maintains the automated underwriting and new‑business systems that support life insurance operations.
This role translates business requirements into technical specifications, develop rules, workflows, and tools, and partner closely with development teams on implementation, testing, and system design reviews. The expertise in life underwriting and advanced analytical skills are used to assess applications, underwrite risks within delegated limits, and provide day‑to‑day production support including urgent issue resolution.
This role serves as a subject‑matter expert and advocate for introducing innovative underwriting technology to operations staff, including training and process rollout. In addition, this role develops reporting solutions, support data management, and participate in strategic initiatives to enhance customer experience and streamline automated underwriting processes.
What you'll do in this role
- Develops, maintains and enhances underwriting rules systems.
- Provide subject matter expertise/experience to our Automated and Accelerated Processes.
- Independently prepare new business and underwriting system requirements documentation for specific portions of process.
- Creates process design for complex systems and processes including user acceptance testing (writing complex test cases, implementing and creating solutions).
- Translate user requirements, write technical specifications, and work closely with development resources. Participate in large system implementations. Accurately estimate and deliver assigned tasks. Participate in requirements definition, design walk-throughs, and code reviews.
- Provides day to day production support. Perform urgent problem resolution.
- Conducts testing of system changes and facilitates quality assurance testing for system modifications.
- Develops reports using various reporting tools and supports data management for new business and underwriting systems.
- Explores strategic initiatives focused on improving the customer experience and automated underwriting.
- Review individual life insurance applications and underwrite standard and substandard risks within authorized limits of authority in accordance with department guidelines. Perform the role of new business and underwriting as needed as well as train and introduce the role and responsibilities to others.

Compensation
Salary Range: $93,900- $156,600 plus eligibility for annual bonus program
