The Supervisor, Financial Counseling is responsible for overseeing the financial counseling team, ensuring patients receive comprehensive financial guidance and support. This role involves managing daily operations, developing strategies to improve patient financial services, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. The supervisor is expected to be knowledgeable about all department processes and functions and represent the department at meetings within the organization and with outside entities.

The Supervisor, Financial Counseling promotes an excellent patient experience by leading the Financial Counseling team while also performing the duties of a Financial Counselor. Key components of the financial counseling program include insurance verification and benefit explanation, internal and external financial assistance programs, cost estimates, and billing support.

License/Certification/Registration:

  • MNSure Certification within three (3) months of hire or transfer into the role required.
  • HFMA Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) or other relevant certification preferred.

Education:

  • Associate's degree in business, Finance, Healthcare Administration, or related field, or equivalent work experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, Finance, Healthcare Administration or related field preferred.

Experience:

  • At least four years' experience in a Healthcare Revenue Cycle, insurance or other related financial institution required.
  • Minimum one year's experience providing work direction to a team and/or leadership experience preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Mastery of complex Revenue Cycle work, including advanced knowledge of insurance plans and benefits.
  • Mastery of financial assistance and other governmental funding programs.
  • Mastery of communicating financial matters to patient families, including financially securing services, and discussing and collecting on outstanding balances.
  • Ability to train and mentor employees and provide coaching for performance improvement.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate eligibility and enrollment requirements for programs that assist in managing medical liabilities.
  • Ability to effectively work in both a team environment and independently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with providers, patients, families, and employees.
  • Ability to effectively work in a remote environment and connect via multiple communication channels (phone, email, text, etc.).
  • Knowledge of insurance functions impacting billing, clinical teams, quality of care, and the patient experience.
  • Ability to meet departmental quality, production, and prior authorization standards.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a high level of customer service.
