Job Description:

The Risk Management Department is recruiting for a Supervising Liability Claims Representative to oversee the activities of the Liability Division. This position supervises a medium-sized team of approximately ten direct reports, including Liability Claims Adjusters and Claims Assistants. The primary responsibilities of this position are to plan, organize, and direct the activities of liability, medical malpractice, and property claims programs for the County. This position assigns, evaluates, and supervises the investigation, adjusting, and defense of all public liability claims; approves recommended settlement value within authorized monetary authority; analyzes legislation, court decisions, and industry trends; and administers the County's public liability subrogation recovery program.

 

Modified Benefit Option: As an alternative to the traditional benefits package, you may also be eligible to elect the Modified Benefit Option (MBO) that provides an increased base rate of pay ($1.75 per hour above the base rate of pay) with modified benefits. 

A hybrid telework schedule may be offered upon satisfactory work performance. The department may also offer a 9/80 schedule, where incumbents enjoy a nine-day biweekly schedule.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must successfully pass a background check, including fingerprinting, verification of employment history, and physical exam/drug test.

Travel: Travel throughout the county may be required. Employees will be required to make provision for transportation. Mileage reimbursement may be available.

Minimum Requirements

Option 1: Six (6) years of full-time, highly responsible experience in the direct administration or supervision of complex liability claims including: reviewing, evaluating, and investigating tort liability claims which must include subrogation in multiple lines of coverage, medical malpractice, personal injury, and 1st and 3rd party property damage. Experience must include two (2) years of full-time supervisory or lead experience. Experience may be concurrent. 

Option 2: A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution** AND four (4) years of full-time, highly responsible experience in the direct administration or supervision of complex liability claims including: reviewing, evaluating, and investigating tort liability which must include subrogation in multiple lines of coverage, medical malpractice, personal injury, and 1st and 3rd party property damage. Experience must include two (2) years of full-time supervisory or lead experience. Experience may be concurrent.

  • **International Coursework: Qualifying degrees or coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. Degrees or coursework completed outside the U.S. must be accompanied with an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service showing equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience administering claims for a public entity.
  • Considerable experience supervising a large public liability claims department or division with specific experience in Medical Malpractice, Police, Flood, Road, and Auto Liability.
  • Possess the ability to weigh and include the varied interests and objectives of multiple, diverse stakeholders and bring those stakeholders to mutual resolution and conclusion on difficult issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and possess the ability to use advanced technology to track and supervise the administration of claims.
  • Experience in making presentations to Board level members of a public agency.
