Location:
Remote positions are open to applicants based anywhere in the continental U.S. Hybrid positions are open to applicants based in the Phoenix, Arizona area.

The Role:
The Senior Accounting Manager provides strong relationship-based customer service to SFS chapters, creating service and product enhancements, and serves as a leader of both people and initiatives within the department. (Shared Financial Services (SFS) provides accounting and financial reporting services to Make-A-Wish chapters that elect to utilize the program.) Provides oversight and guidance to accounting team on financial reporting processes, including reviewing monthly financial statements, providing best practices, identifying process enhancements for SFS chapters, and supporting Chapter leadership with required financial resources. The Senior Accounting Manager works collaboratively with the SFS Director and leadership to develop and implement goals and strategies for the team. This position interacts with individuals on all levels within the enterprise.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of financial accounting, including generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and financial statement preparation, to ensure accurate, efficient, timely financial reporting and related processes.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to network with other departments within the organization, as well as externally with chapter personnel and the chapter’s Boards of Directors, regarding various issues related to the financial reporting process.
- Demonstrated success in people management.
- Excellent knowledge of internal and management control systems.
- Excellent knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and variance reporting.
- Excellent knowledge of audit planning processes and procedures.
- Excellent knowledge of accounting and information systems applications, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
- General knowledge of 990s.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with a high level of trust and confidentiality and possess strong business ethics.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Leads and manages a team of 8–10 accountants, including 3-4 direct reports. This includes setting expectations, providing feedback, managing workload, and ensuring consistent response times and delivery of results.
- Serves as advisor to SFS team in accounting practices and leadership development.
- Leads onboarding efforts for chapters joining SFS, which includes streamlining and standardizing historical processes, ensuring financial tie-outs from previous years, creating, and reconciling all accounts, and developing and maintaining chapter relationship and trust. Guides transition of chapter to permanent manager after onboarding period.
- Delivers direction to the support teams, Accounts Payable and Donor Care, to further streamline and enrich current processes.
- Participates in the implementation of new systems and processes, initiatives, and enhancements.
- Provides guidance, and reviews as needed, on the chapter internal/external financial process and reporting package including the approval of journal entries as needed. Ensures monthly close is being managed accurately, timely and effectively with appropriate variance analysis and explanations.
- Monitors SFS chapters’ performance against budget and national benchmarking metrics, ensuring appropriate recording of revenue and expenses agrees to both GAAP and MAW policies.
- Provides guidance on the Salesforce system to ensure appropriate coding and reporting of chapter revenue streams.
- Serves as liaison for all SFS chapters for feedback, enhancements, and requests.
- Provides service and assistance to the enterprise related to NetSuite, financial reporting, and month/year end deadlines.
- Offers guidance for the team in the preparation of annual budget.
- Acts as key staff person in annual internal and external audit process communicating with National Office, Chapters, and external auditors for newly onboarded chapters. Assists as needed with additional chapters during the audit process.
- Resource for review and evaluation of time and use studies used in allocating the indirect costs of the chapters.
- Performs other job-related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or related field required.
- 5+ years of experience in accounting and/or financial reporting required.
- 2+ years of leadership and people management experience required.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications required, including demonstrated expertise in Microsoft Excel.
- CPA designation a bonus.
- Experience with NetSuite strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of nonprofit organizations is preferred.
