Job Summary:

PayPal is seeking an experienced Legal Counsel to drive growth in our expanding US credit business. We need business-minded, self-motivated candidates with a proven track record advising on commercial and consumer credit products, including BNPL and credit cards, and significant experience leading attorney teams. You'll provide legal and strategic guidance to senior business leaders and functional partners in our PayPal Credit organization on matters related to small business lending, consumer lending, and credit card products. Key responsibilities include providing strategic and regulatory guidance on new product initiatives and enhancements, negotiating strategic partnerships, working with senior legal and business leaders to execute compliant strategies, and delivering high-quality, business-oriented legal support that enables commercial growth. You'll also provide effective management, leadership, and coaching to team members and support bank partner relationships.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop and articulate a clear, compelling vision and strategy, inspiring the legal team and aligning with PayPal's long-term goals.
  • Provide key inputs as an industry leader and expert, staying ahead of legal trends and influencing industry standards.
  • Influence long-term success strategy of the function, driving innovation and continuous improvement in legal practices.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations, leading the adoption of cutting-edge legal technologies and best practices.
  • Manage legal risks and safeguard PayPal's legal interests, developing forward-looking risk management strategies.
  • Represent PayPal in litigation and other legal proceedings, overseeing complex cases and ensuring strategic alignment with business objectives.

Expected Qualifications:

  • 12+ years relevant experience and a Juris doctorate degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Significant expertise in legal issues arising in most, if not all, of the following areas: credit and lending, financial services, consumer protection, and marketing.
  • Significant expertise and prior experience with federal and state lending laws, including Truth in Lending Act, Equal Credit Opportunity Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, UDAAP, and other relevant regulations.
  • Experience with e-commerce, payments, credit cards or other lending products.
  • Experience dealing with regulatory bodies, regulatory exams, internal and third-party audits.
  • Experience collaborating closely with product, compliance, and technology teams to foster responsible innovation while maintaining sound risk management practices.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and to tolerate change and ambiguity.
  • Ability and drive to take ownership of projects and tasks which, in many cases, will be matters of first impression.
  • Openness to adapting his/her practice in response to the changing landscape of the industry.
  • Strong proficiency in leveraging a collaborative approach to subject matter management and knowledge sharing, and comfort with a flexible, agile environment that emphasizes collaboration and team performance over management hierarchy. The successful candidate will enthusiastically collaborate with PayPal legal colleagues across our global organization and be able to hit the ground running.
  • Creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to stay calm and help drive solutions while providing sound legal advice under challenging circumstances.
  • Act as a thought leader, offering proactive insights on evolving fintech regulations and emerging trends impacting consumer and small business lending.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and admission to at least one state bar in current good standing.
  • A minimum of 15 years of relevant legal experience in-house or at a major law firm (with at least 3+ years at a mid-to-large size technology company[and/or financial services company).
  • Exceptional writing skills, with strong attention to detail and ability to generate creative, original drafted documents, agreements, and disclosures.
  • Outstanding communication skills and ability to work both in teams and independently.
  • Ability to effectively synthesize and explain complex and detailed legal requirements to clients across different levels within the organization.

The total compensation for this practice may include an annual performance bonus (or other incentive compensation, as applicable), equity, and medical, dental, vision, and other benefits. 

The US national annual pay range for this role is $232,000 to $398,750
