Job Description

General Summary:    

This is a dynamic role within a collaborative and fast-paced environment. The Senior Communications Specialist, under the direction of the Communications Manager at Lurie Children's, is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive communication strategies to enhance the hospital's reputation, engage key stakeholders, and support organizational objectives. This hybrid position requires strong written and verbal communication skills, with regular on-site presence needed for patient interactions, photo and video shoots, and internal collaboration. The ideal candidate will be a creative and results-oriented professional with expertise in content development, journalism or media relations, and social media, along with the ability to work effectively with patient families, medical staff, and external partners.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Content creation and storytelling: Produce high-quality written content including patient stories, physician profiles, newsletters, website copy, and marketing materials that showcase the hospital's mission and achievements while maintaining sensitivity to patient privacy and healthcare regulations.
  • Collaboration and teamwork: Assist other marketing team members, and medical center staff, with projects relevant to essential service line marketing. Projects may include website copy, video shoot coordination, scriptwriting and interviewing, podcast script preparation, brochure creation, and other relevant projects.
  • Patient and family engagement: Collaborate directly with patients and families to develop authentic storytelling content, coordinate photo shoots and video productions, and ensure appropriate consent and privacy protocols are followed.
  • Digital communications management: Oversee website content updates, collaborate on social media content development, and ensure consistent messaging across all digital platforms while maintaining brand standards and regulatory compliance.
  • Photography and visual content coordination: Plan and execute photo shoots throughout the hospital, working with patients, families, and staff to capture compelling, on-brand, visual content while ensuring HIPAA compliance and appropriate permissions.
  • Strategy and planning: Work with Communications Manager to brainstorm novel ways to reach new audiences and use new platforms. Help fulfill obligations with current content partnerships, such as podcasts. Assist with communications regarding new or departing physicians, and other related hospital affairs.
  • Adhere to service principles: Perform all job functions with a focus on patient-centered care, innovation, service excellence, and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to all stakeholders.

 

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or English.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years writing and communications experience, preferably in academic medicine or the non-profit healthcare sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify compelling stories that support fundraising objectives.
  • Experience developing and editing digital content including video.
  • Has broad understanding of and active interest in healthcare, medicine and biomedical science.
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects under demanding deadlines.

Education

Bachelor's Degree: Digital Communications and Media/Multimedia (Required)

Pay Range

$70,720.00-$115,627.20 Salary

The pay range for this job indicates minimum and maximum targets for the position.
