The Statutory Reporting Unit is within the Corporate Controllers Organization and is primarily responsible for managing the statutory financial reporting process to the NAIC and the State Departments of Insurance. The Unit is also responsible for preparing and supporting state compliance filings, rating agency surveys and other statutory-based governmental requests.

The Senior Accountant Statutory Reporting position will report directly to the Statutory Reporting Director who reports to the Assistant Vice President of Statutory External Reporting for The Hartford.

This position will be responsible for assisting in the preparation of the quarterly, annual and audited statements, the completion of State and Regulatory compliance filings, along with assisting in the financial reporting process for 18 Property & Casualty Insurance Companies and one Life Insurance Company.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office (Hartford, CT) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation of quarterly, annual and audited footnotes, including coordination with other internal departments and business lines, using Sovos, and Workiva Wdesk financial reporting software.
  • Take ownership of the preparation, review and timely submission of state and agency compliance filings for assigned states and agencies, including tracking state checklists, and accurate tracking in the statutory reporting tracking tool.
  • Monitor and review tasks performed by Cognizant offshore partners.
  • Administer the payment of regulatory fees and expenses for assigned states and agencies
  • Handle system administration of Wdesk for various requirements including permissions for preparer/reviewer changes and updates for new reporting requirements
  • Prepare and/or review annual and quarterly statutory regulatory filings including balance sheet, income statements, cash flows and other applicable schedules, as assigned.
  • Prepare journal entries to assist in the month and quarter close process.
  • Maintain documentation standard processes to reflect changes to filings.
  • Evaluate current processes for potential improvement and added efficiencies.
  • Participate in special projects requiring accounting expertise, ad hoc requests, and provide recommendations, as needed.
  • Use Microsoft tools, IBM Cognos Table Manager 1 (TM1), Wdesk and Sovos to generate the required data for reporting.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related discipline required.
  • Accounting and insurance industry experience with knowledge of statutory accounting, financial reporting and compliance filing requirements is preferred.
  • Previous experience working with state regulators a plus.
  • Highly organized with a commitment to quality, accuracy and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Exceptional communication skills to collaborate with various internal and external partners.
  • Strong computer skills and desire to learn new applications (Excel, Sovos, Wdesk, TM1).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role.

The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.

The annualized base pay range for this role is: $74,400 - $111,600
