Overview

The Research Assistant will support a community-based research project examining relationships between home environments and respiratory health in southern Connecticut. Working with interdisciplinary research teams, the Research Assistant will conduct home visits, collect biological and environmental samples, administer health assessments, manage study data, and coordinate participant activities. This position requires strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently in community settings.

Research and collects data through home visit intakes, structured interviews, and standardized assessments for research projects. Travels to participant residences to collect environmental samples, install monitoring equipment, and conduct health surveys. Administers validated questionnaires and performs physiological measurements using specialized equipment. Maintains detailed documentation following research protocols. Reviews physiological measurements for quality and validity. Categorizes study participants based on health assessment results. Performs quality control checks on collected data. Assists in research design and modifies research procedures and survey instruments as needed to improve data quality and participant experience. Prepares study communications including recruitment materials and participant reports. Contributes to progress reports, manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, and conference presentations. Documents standard operating procedures. Reports on status of research activities to principal investigators. Trains new team members on data collection protocols, equipment calibration, and safety procedures. Demonstrates proper sample handling and storage techniques. Ensures all staff maintain required research certifications and training. Manages home visit scheduling across multiple participants. Coordinates equipment deployment and retrieval timelines. Tracks participant progress throughout study duration. Ensures protocol compliance and timely completion of study milestones. Collaborates with community partners to identify eligible households. Conducts eligibility screening and enrollment activities. Implements retention strategies to maintain participant engagement. Tracks recruitment progress and adjusts strategies as needed. Monitors supply levels for sample collection materials, equipment consumables, and study supplies. Places orders and ensures adequate inventory for ongoing research activities. Maintains equipment maintenance and calibration schedules. Tracks participant compensation disbursements. Monitors supply expenditures and reimbursement documentation. Assists with budget reporting and administrative tasks. Performs additional functions including data entry into electronic systems, specimen processing and storage, adverse event documentation, and regulatory compliance activities.

 

Required Skills and Abilities

 

1. Proven experience with exposure science and assessment methods.

2. Competent operation of research equipment and data management systems. Ability to learn new laboratory and field procedures. Commitment to research ethics, participant confidentiality, and regulatory compliance including HIPAA and human subjects protections. Meticulous adherence to research protocols for data collection, documentation, and quality control.

3. Ability to manage multiple participants and concurrent activities. Strong time management and prioritization abilities. Ability to work autonomously in community settings and make appropriate decisions during field activities.

4. Clear written and verbal communication for participant interactions, data documentation, and team coordination. Ability to explain research concepts in accessible language. Ability to build rapport with diverse participants and establish trust with community members. Culturally sensitive communication skills.

5. Willingness to work non-traditional hours to accommodate participant schedules. Adaptability to changing study conditions.


Preferred Skills and Abilities

 

1. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred/ Masters Degree.

 

Principal Responsibilities

Oversees and instructs research and support staff on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance. 4. Schedules and coordinates research activities. Identifies and recruits study participants. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. 5. May assist in preparing financial information and monitoring budgets. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.

 

Required Education and Experience

Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
