Position Summary
The University of New Mexico Press seeks a Publishing and Editorial Assistant to join the premier publisher of academic, regional, literary, and trade books in the state of New Mexico, and one of the oldest and largest university presses in the West. Reporting to the Director, the Publishing Assistant is part of both the Administration and Acquisitions departments, and serves in a central position at the Press. S/he is involved with acquisitions and business/administration decision making; is a principal liasion with the business department, marketing and sales department, and editorial, design, production department; has primary responsibility for processing permissions requests; and, working with the director, is a key part of press subsidiary rights activities, in partnership with our distribution and rights partner Simon & Schuster. This is an ideal position from which to get a strategic and practical overview of the business of book publishing and launch a career. This is a hybrid role based on the beautiful UNM campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Founded in 1929, UNM Press is one of the oldest and largest university presses in the West. The Press publishes original and groundbreaking scholarship in the fields of anthropology and archaeology, Native studies, Chicana/o studies, literary criticism, Latin American studies, and US Western History. We publish trade books and series related to New Mexico and the Southwest, including fiction, poetry, cookbooks, guidebooks, history and biography, especially works from underrepresented voices of the region. And we publish books and authors with Western roots and national and international resonance through our trade imprint High Road Books.
Reporting to the Director, the Publishing Assistant provides administrative support across the Press, including Acquisitions, Business, Design & Production, and Administration. Specific responsibilities include:
- Assistant to the Director
- Applying for copyright with the Library of Congress
- Tracking permissions requests and processing agreements
- Pitching subsidiary rights and processing contracts and licenses
- Contract processing
- General author correspondence
- Manuscript styling and preparation
- Creating and tracking invoices through business systems
- Scheduling faculty press committee and other meetings
- Other duties as may be assigned

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications

- One year of experience in a publishing or similar work environment
- Intellectually curious and passionate about books and reading
- Self-motivated, self-directed, able to take the initiative
- Ability to prioritize, and to manage multiple ongoing tasks
- Experience, or keen interest in, working with authors and manuscripts
- Familiarity with Filemaker Pro database management, MS Word, Excel, other business software
